How to safely trade stuff...online?

Hi,
Some newbie Q's here, im wondering how folks here trade their knives without getting ripped off? How do you tell if someone is trustworthy without "feedbacks"

Reason for my WTT is, my beloved pocket knife doesnt fit my palm well and my grip isn't what it used to be (big problem IMO), it sees only light use (rope cutting) AND, if i tried selling on Ebay i wouldn't get what i think its worth since it has some (gasp!) paint wear! on the blade .....So i figure trading with someone who has a similar value knife with paint wear is the way to go, but i dunno how its done....safely

alot of the people here are very trustworthy. however one thing you can do is check their feedback before you accept a trade with them.and its completely up to you but alot of people only ship conus due to the fact that knives and customs dont mix.

If you post up a thread you can wait for someone with feedback to offer a knife you want. Or maybe a high feedback member can act as a third party?

I've had a few successful and smooth trade transactions here on the forums, and it's all based on the honor system. That said, they've been with traders/sellers with a good number of positive feedback. How to get around that catch-22? Usually the one with more positive feedback requests that they receive the item first, before they ship their end of the trade. Also check the GBU (Good, Bad, Ugly) section for opinions and outcomes for certain people that you might want to do business with or stay away from.

I have never traded, so thats a good way to avoid getting into a bad trade.

But were I to do so, it would have to be with someone who has tons of good feedback.

How does a member get this feedback if no one will sell to someone without feedback? Contrary to a lot of belief most people don't come to BF to rip off other people.

Well generally some of the easiest way to get feedback at the start is to buy things, as no matter what your feedback in a sales generally the "buyer" will send the money first, so then you feedback. I personally have never had a issue with any member on this site ever, bladeforums is a very good community.

Most ask for the tracking number then once they get that they ship. Everyone started on this site the same.

With all due respect, you just joined the forum and only have two posts -- both in this thread -- so do not be surprised or offended if someone wishing to trade with you says they will send out their trade upon receipt of yours. Delivery confirmation with online tracking is an extra $1.65 the last I checked and can be added to First Class Mail, although many guys on this forum use Priority, and if the item is fairly valuable insurance is added in the event of loss or damage. Do not use UPS.

Just pick and choose who you trade with well.
Me being a member with a lot of feedback and it all being positive, I would ask someone with little to no feedback to ship to me first. Upon receiving their end I would then ship my end. Do not worry about this when dealing with someone who is an upstanding member of the forums. However, if someone else with little or no feedback wants to trade, you would want to make the arrangement to ship at the same time, or if they haven't been around as long, and would agree they could ship first.

Just check out the trade forums, talk to different members, be as honest as possible, and only deal with people who are also being honest.

Don't be shy, I was nervous to trade at first too, I'm glad I did it. =]

Oh yeah, i realize since i'm a newb with no feedback, i will have to ship 1st. Obviously when i posted this topic, i didn't notice BF members have feedback. So It will be great to have another alternative to Ebay's excessive fees, and help other collectors on BF. In a sluggish economy folks can still keep their hobbies floating by trading....it worked for the Pilgrams and Native Americans.....well sometimes it did

Next to your post count it will show your feedback but this only show up when you are in the trade section or the sale section. Also dont be surprised if people ask you to send your item first until you get around 5 or so good feed back ratings.

Now if you are talking Ebay stuff, that rings of selling. To sell here, you have to have a Gold membership minimum. Don't try and sell or otherwise conduct business outside of the Exchange, especially without a membership.

As others have said, start your trading by making a few trades with long time members that YOU trust--as determined by their exemplary feedback. You can offer to ship first to demonstrate good faith on your part, and if they have lots of positive feedback you can be reasonably assured they will hold up their end once they receive your knife. Members with 100% positive feedback amassed over multiple years generally won't jeopardize it by doing something dumb.

Once everyone is satisfied, ask that they give you positive feedback. Repeat as necessary until you have accumulated enough positive feedback that others will feel comfortable dealing with you.
