I bought my first Knife when I was 13, I was never into knives and didn't see the need to have one but 13 was the age my friends began receiving knives from their parents and so I joined the fad and asked my parents to buy me one. My father was a quiet man but even he questioned why I needed a knife but after a month of begging I finally got both their approval and ordered a CRKT M16 ($18). When I first got it, I showed it off to all my friends and took it with me everywhere I went. As time went by, I began taking it to school. I was bullied everyday for months by a kid named Jason and felt extremely depressed and wanted to fight him and even had thoughts of taking my knife out and stabbing him. I began practicing at home, stabbing and cutting different objects pretending it was him and one day I went for a stab and missed the box and went down and stabbed my thigh. I threw the knife out my leg and was shocked by all the blood, I froze and had no clue what to do. I wrapped my leg with a cloth and sat there thinking of a way to hide it from my dad. Of course he found out and I've never seen him that disappointed and pissed at me, later that day we went to the hospital to find out the cut was almost two inch's deep, very close to my bone and I had to receive seven shots and ten stitches. I was ashamed with myself, thinking I actually was considering hurting someone. My dad threw away the knife and I never bought a knife again until I was 17 and that's when I began getting really into knives and educating myself on the safety and real purpose of using them. I'm sorry for leaving you a story but in the end, carrying knives for self defense only gets you in deeper trouble, I know you didn't what to hear this but it's the truth. Looking back I do chuckle a bit at stabbing myself but also extremely thankful because it could have gone down much worse.

I have the the CRKT M21-14SF which is well made and way cool. Also, I laid eyes on the Boker Kalashnikov this morning, and it makes me want to run out and get one--which I need like another hole in the head! Have fun and be careful...

Ok up to $300 and want a large folding knife, but you are kinda young and part of this knife is you learning responsibility. S last year I bought a Spyderco Resilience. Blade ois 4 inches plus G-10 handle, scary sharp look around under Fifty bucks. (made in China) so if you trash it, loose it, scratch it up if you have to sharpen it, you will learn and gain some knowledge. This knife may be to big for your hand size, so the next smaller model of this knife is the Persistence may fit you good.
And since you are a kid ask your parents if you can keep the change.
A noce knfe is great, but your knowledge of how to use it is greater.
P S.,.,. if you got a lesser priced knife, you could also check out a good sharpener / system to maintain said knife and then you could go on to make all you parents kitchen knives freaky sharp.
When you turn 13, you can legitimately join Bladeforums. Until then, try not to die carrying your $300 knife.
My biscuit would love for you to join the Fans of Becker Knives Group and the Fans of Ka-Bar Knives Group.

Err guys, with respect he's been banned so suggestions are pointless now
ive seen what ive seen because i want to help people. dont be sorry for me at all. all people i have seen die i knew it was not our fault. all of the EMT'S did there best or we did not get there in time. but you still live with it when you spend the final moments of somebody's life with them.
a lot of these people are poo-pooing this kid and chewing him out for admitting this knife would be edged toward self defense.
kid, these forum members have wisdom, everything they are saying about the realities of knife self defense is true. and you want to avoid drawing a knife at all costs let alone using it.
but guys, I don't think its right to be so quick to assume that this kid is going to be irresponsible with it or that he thinks knife fighting is the same in COD as it is in reality. He might be young but that doesn't mean hes a stupid little goon
also, we don't know where this kid lives, it really might be that bad wherever he is, and if he's liable to get cornered by some heroin addict with a shiv who won't back off or listen to reason all of your suggestions that he works out or just "takes his licks" won't really be too helpful. having said that I am skeptical that this neighborhood is rough enough to warrant a self defense knife if the kids are running around with $300-$900 knives in their pockets. sounds more like the suburbs :/
A knife is unnecessary in a self defense situation. All you need to do is: scissor kick, scissor kick, six rabbit punches, then 360 spin into throat grab and tear out the guy's esophagus -- he can't eat, he'll starve to death. Then cartwheel the hell out of there.
I was going to mention this in my other post but, i figured most people already knew... if getting mugged is the problem, the BEST thing you can do to protect yourself is carry a $20 bill, not a knife... the types of people who do stickups arent looking to kill or hurt anyone,, they just need quick cash. but if you think it would be better for a 13 year old to go 1vs.1 in a knife fight with a crazed junkie..... well, lets just say you're entitled to your own opinion...
If you look at this realistically, how much training do you think a 13 year old can take?
If he faces a knife user in the street, worse case scenario, the guy may have the same experience with a knife the amount of years this kid has been alive
He may as well ask what knife to kill himself with. Excuse my sarcasm.

+1. This.
We need to think harder about the advice we give the younger guys who come on here. I've seen threads where a kid comes on and says he can't sleep and is scratching his skin raw because he wants a knife so bad. The advice? "Go for it."
And now this. A 13 year old wants to buy a $300 tactical folder to ward off thugs. The advice? "Go for it."

I say go for it
What makes anyone think he is going to listen
He said he IS getting a knife
Best just to give advice on the best knife he's going to buy regardless of your opinion of it being necessary
Tis
that's why I say "who won't back off or listen to reason" like I said always avoid these kinds of confrontations at all costs (and I did say that), and shoveling over some cash is a good way of doing that but what if that doesn't save you? what if this guy just wants to hurt someone or doesn't want a witness or something? THAT'S when you might want a knife
Agree but in the hands of an untrained/partially trained 12 year old?
Legality aside, the mere fact that he's asking what knife is best for combat already shows a complete lack of experience
As far as him going to get it anyway, what are we telling visitors about BF, who happen to read this thread?
That we are responsible and trying to get these kids right, or that we're encouraging them to be juvenile delinquents?
On top of asking for SD/combat knife advice he joined the forum illegally
