I had a Smith and Wesson knife lost in the yard during cleanup after Hurricane Charley in August 2004. Yesterday (Friday the 13th of all days) my son used his metal detector birthday present from the grandparents to find it in about 15 minutes. Ever wonder what your knife would look like buried in Florida for 8 years? Here it is:

That's cool. What did it look like before you lost it?

I wish I had a before pic, but unfortunately I don't. I'm pretty sure it was a Smith and Wesson SWAT knife (fairly inexpensive) with the fake scrimshaw pictures that I used as while working.

Can not open it, tried soaking with oil and pliers and even taking screws out. No dice.

    Wow, that' s really fascinating!
Would love to see a photo of the blade, it seems to look alot better than the handle.

edit: saw the post above me now, never mind

Throwing any knife away is horrible luck. Plus I think I like it better the way it is now.

I think I found a pic of the model as I remember it. I think this was the one.

To open it you could insert a rod into the handles and hammer out the blade

I was just going to ask if that was an aluminum handle. We all think of metal as being so much more durable than plastic, but in this particular instance a synthetic would have held up much better.

Try putting the blade in a vice then force oil into where the blade is and try to pry it apart.

The aluminum handle has acted as a sacreficial anode like on a ship .Unless you want to save as a curiosity I would dump the handle [remove in any way you can ] and save the steel which looks in good shape. Perhaps you could get one of our members to make a handle to get a useble knife.

and send a camera with it so they can film their reaction to the knife.

the aluminum looks like some kind of stone.
