I swapped the black/satin blades on my brown and orange Skylines, but it seems the now orange/black one has some very slight up and down play.

I tried swapping liners and pivots to no avail, and the satin/brown one is completely solid. I'm not sure what the disconnect is, and my best guess is that the scales are such that the combo isn't lining up properly. The odd thing is that it isn't as if the blade is loose, but it seems as if there is a bit of lock flex that wasn't there before.

    Thoughts?

I have had this problem as well... i wanted to swap the blades on my from my Red and Brown Skylines and the parts didnt fit quite right, they had a lot of vertical play.
It has boggled my mind for quite some time now. I really want to have a Red scales/Black blade combo skyline!!! LOL

Hopefully someone will come along with an answer!

my orange/black has a little bit of vertical blade play as well. i tried swapping liners, but that didn't change anything. i have just learned to live with it, it isn't that noticeable. the brown/satin version had no play at all when i put it back together, so i don't really know what the deal is.

Well, a small update (having some free time now at work). I swapped the liners again, noticing that I had the black blade's original liner in the tan handle with the satin blade. I only realized this because the liner of the brown/black one was thicker than the one in the orange. I also swapped the back spacers, having noticed the specific nick in the spacer of the brown/black one.

So, I swapped the liners and spacers. Now the vertical flex is less. Not completely gone, as it is in the now tan/satin blade, but much less than it was before.

I'm not entirely certain of the reasoning here, but with everything tightened up and centered as it should be, it works, locks up, and seems just fine. It takes a decent grab and flex to notice the movement, and I highly doubt normal use will show anything horrible.

I did the all black hybrid. No problems.

Here's a look at the liners. You should notice the difference in thickness. I wonder if this would lead to the flex.

I did the blade swap to make a black/black and a brown/plain; I just checked both of them, and the brown/plain has no play (with about 30% lock engagement), and the black/black has just a tiny bit of vertical play (if you grab it quite firmly and wiggle hard) (btw, it has about 90% lock engagement). I had not noticed it before. I only moved the blades (everything else, ie. liners, spacers, screws, etc. stayed with the knife that they were originally with). Like you, I don't think that it would ever be an issue, but I think I will take a closer look tomorrow.
