Anyone ever defend themselves with there knife?

So a lot of people think I'm weird for always having a knife with me. I mainly have it for utility purposes, but I would always use it for defense if I needed it. So I was wondering if anyone has ever used there knife for defensive purposes or even just pulled it out to ward off your opponent.

    Edge,
Welcome. This is probably not what you're looking for but I was bullied growing up (20 years ago) by an older punk kid who lived across the street. This guy was a real thug, always in trouble, no mother in the house and his dad worked several jobs. I got tired of getting punched in the stomach or face every other day so one day, I was probably 10 and he was 15-16, he started towards me while I was playing outside. I decided I wasn’t going to be hit that day so I pulled out a cheap dagger that I had bought at the Farmer's market (yes, my father let me purchase the knife at that age for about $10). I held my ground and pointed the knife at him as he advanced toward me. He taunted me as he began changing direction. I don’t ever recall having a problem with that individual after that point. I saw him again, several years later, when I was in high school and playing football at the time. He was shockingly unemployed and very pleasant to me as I gave him a disgusted look.

Sorry this isn’t the heroic story that you may have had in mind but I saw that day the importance and effect of having a tool readily available that I could use to protect myself in an emergency or against a bigger adversary.

Great story man. You had some real balls at 10.

Get punched every other day for a while and you might be suprised what you're capable of. I just pulled it, no clue what i wouldn't done if he kept coming towards me. Thinking back it could've ended horribly with either him or me being seriously injured. luckily he had just enough brain cells to turn away. Someone was looking after me that day.....

Ya lets all be thankful for that. Its crazy what you can do when you're young.

Had a similar "enlightening" at about the age of 15. Some punks in the neighborhood following me in a car as i was walking. Had a Buck 110 held against my chest they couldnt see what it was they eventually drove off. I felt it was the right thing to do to have that knife that day, not especially to protect myself but in an overall way. This is the type of thing heavily criminalized in other countries notably England. Screw that i have a right to be safe.

I agree we all need to be able to protect our friends and family. Its sad for those people in England because the bad guys always find a way to get weapons even when they are illegal for everyone else.

I only had to pull my knife in self defence once and that was against a dog and not a person. Luckily for the dog, it's owner called it down before it got close enough to me to be able to knife it. Why they were walking a large dog with no leash...

I have actually always been concerned about those crazy people that walk their dog without a leash. Especially big ones that aren't well trained.

Same here, to some extent. Actually, the only dangerous encounter I've had with a dog was with a golden retriever, a breed known for being friendly. Dog snapped at me, would have bitten me if the owner hadn't grabbed its collar. On the other hand, my girlfriend's pit bull, a breed known for violent temperament, only poses a threat to you if you're able to be licked to death. Even then, her dog has always been on a leash while out walking.

On topic; Yes, I have, thankfully only twice in my life have I ever used a knife to defend myself. Brandishing a knife in a defensive way, to 'ward off' a potential attacker can get you charged here in Canada. Although once you're being attacked, I'd suggest actually using the knife rather than waving it at him [if the situation warrants it]
