    Taylor Brands Warranty

My dad gave my son several years back a Coleman clip blade knife produced by TaylorBrands in Kingsport, TN. He only started keeping the knife in his pocket this year. The knife has never really even been used, just carried in my son's pocket when camping. Well, one of the screws that holds the blade into place fell out along with 3 of the small side screws. I contacted Coleman, who in return gave me the number to TaylorBrands. I spoke with Tammy in the Customer Service dept. at TaylorBrands and she advised me they only have "1 Knife left" to replace any Coleman knife warranty. She also informed me that there was going to be a "Warranty Fee" that I must pay. I tried to explain that I know this was not an expensive knife, but by the time that I paid the "Warranty Fee", shipping cost and insurance that I would be within a few dollars of buying another knife. I offered to purchase the replacement screws and repair the knife myself, but no replacement parts were available. I have a draw full of Old Timer's, Schrade's and Uncle Henry's, and I always felt good about their products. I was just really taken back that they would request a "Warranty Fee" almost equal to the purchase price of the knife. I have never had a warranty claim and and was wondering if this is the "Norm" when it comes to knives warranty? Would be nice for everyone to warranty their knive's like Esee!!

I don't own anything from Taylor Brands, so I cannot speak to that warranty situation. Most manufacturers will repair or replace parts and even the entire knife if it is truly defective or if there is bad materials used. Spyderco requests you send $5 along with an item to help cover return shipping. Most others will cover that part. Kershaw/ZT will send out screws, torsion bars, pivot screws, clips, etc for free when requested via the correct channels.

The older Shrades were high quality, the newer stuff is mostly flea market garbage made in China. I'd say this is not the norm, but then again not every company mass produces consistently high levels of junk knives like Taylor Brands.

Thanks for the post. I have never had a knife warranty claim and thought maybe it was just me. Guess somethings were better in the old days. I just sent an email to Morgan Taylor, president of Taylor Brands. Do not expect a reply, but will post if I get one.

I'd venture to say that one of those older USA made Old Timers would last your son a lifetime. I agree, they don't make em like they used to. There are some really good companies out there though producing high quality pocket knives. I've started getting more into traditional knives as of late and have been blown away with the quality of Tree Brand, GEC, USA Buck, Case, and Northwoods.

For the sake of clarity. Spyderco does request that you send a check for $5 along with the knife, but they only cash it if they determine the problem is NOT a warranty issue. Warranty repairs are returned at their expense.

Depends on who you talk to at taylor. I bought a friend an 8 buck taylor. Broke the first of use. He handed it back to me to fix it. I emailed taylor. I complained about the fee deal. Fellow sent me a new more expensive knife to make it right. Since the knife I bought was discontinued. More expensive as in 15 buck knife. Still they made it right enough for me.

That said, imho, you are better spending your money on a kershaw, boker, crkt, spyderco/byrd, etc... import . You'll be much happier with the product and these companies will stand behind their products consistently.

Just wanted to give an update and credit were it is due. I received an email advising me a few days ago that the President of TaylorBrands had reviewed my warranty claim and that a replacement knife would be shipped out; I got the knife in the mail today. Thank you Morgan Taylor for taking the time to review my claim and I am happy with the replacement.
