I have been contacted even recently as a knife maker to copy this or that knife. I have personal issues with that. I tell them so. I won't do it if it is an exact copy, no way. As for myself, I may make something that looks a little bit like someone else's but I never show it or sell it. Very few designs are actually new. I also note the maker that inspired it. Owning up to a mistake immediately shows integrity and trying to hide it is a big mistake that cannot be easily be overcome and takes a long long time. Too bad.

I'm there too, bud. I'm a 210lb, bald voyageur, who enjoys long walks in the woods with heavy bundles across his shoulders..... 300lbs shouldn't be a problem.... wink-wink

And it appears the guy's going off the deep end--not too long ago Jake began posting to this thread:
    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater
Which several friends of Sean Shepherd and I informed of us, and we responded since the last thing the community needs is some off the wall claims by a guy promoting himself as a maker going on ninja adventures, such as killing seven men with AKs with a sword, and ultimately confirming the stereotype most folks fear about makers in general.

Last week he posted the U.S. Infantry's facebook page promoting his work, which was again brought to the attention of several other makers, including myself, Calvin Richardson, and Keith Howell--first warning the page admin and readers about Jake's history, and then of the insane claims he's made elsewhere that have roused some pretty harsh sentiment against the military by civies who were unaware that Jake's claims of being a vet are unfounded and untrue.

To his credit (none) Jake's reaction was fairly out there, instead of responding to the accusations or immediately pulling his post, he and one of his buddies (and customers) launched into threats. This was all abruptly cleared out when the page admins deleted the post before anyone could get a good screen shot.

4 days hence, Jake posted this status (and subsequent thread):

    Jake Tuinstra
I am so sick of cowards. some guys want to slander my work and my business on Facebook and I have finally gotten sick of it so I went and found 1 of them. When I introduced myself he just ran away and locked himself in his house like a scared little girl. He sure like to talk big when he was just sitting behind his keyboard. if you're reading this the rest of you you know who you are and sooner or later I will find you too. maybe at blade show 2013.

It'd be interesting to find out who he was insinuating the coward he confronted was--especially since he (Jake) lives in Wisconsin, and to my knowledge I live in Georgia, Calvin in Missouri, and Keith in Alabama.
This guy is all sorta of off his rocker.

what a poser, though I wouldn't take any of his threats at face value, nor would I believe a word he says, and for his "followers" to agree and believe this goes to show just how shallow his crowd is... he obviously has some identity issues....

Ok, so I've read this thread and even others preceding it. I have seen other posts where he was complimented on the quality of his knives, so curiosity got the best of me and I did an Internet search on his name and came up with this: http://www.sonorandesertknives.com/Jake_Tuinstra.html

If this is the same guy, then I would say that the quality is just not there. The handles are very two-dimensional, looking more like profiled blocks, which is a very novice characteristic. Nothing like the quality seen here. Has anybody else seen his real work? If this is it, then I think these pictures are pretty telling. Nothing even close to what he was claiming to be capable of.

Appears that you guys have hit this one square on.

BTW, the above website is the only one providing any pictures of knives attached to his name that I could find!
