Easy first timer projects?

I meant to make this thread sooner.

I'm leaving for vacation in shortly. My family stays at a YMCA park in Longford Mills, ON. There's quite a bit of new growth deciduous forest, mostly maple and cedar, to hike through and I was wondering (I didn't think to get any books) if the anyone on here had any 'first time playing in the woods with a knife' type projects I could try. I'm taking a hatchet and folding saw to clear out the old trails, which I do every summer anyways, but this year I'll also have a SAK trekker, and could potentially bring a few folders to have at my disposal to play with: ZT0560, Spyderco Military, Queen Cattle King, Kershaw Skyline, Umnumzaan, Buck 110.

The only thing I had in mind was to fashion a walking stick out of some small maple trees that didn't make it to the big time.

You can use cedar or maple to make a camp eating utensil set. One piece can be a stick whittled to either a dished out spoon or flat eating shovel...an inch or so wide and taper the handle as it suits you. If you make soup in camp then you need a spoon but thicker stews and such can work on a flat utensil just fine. To go with that you can make a single or double tined eating fork. If you have plenty of sticks on hand see what you can make of them and if they don't suit you toss them on the fire and try again. When you do enough of these you will eventually find what looks nice to you and keep a set for using again or give them as gifts. They can be as fancy or simple as your skills and patience lets them.
