Anyone have issues with their Wave models???

Well, I just had one.

A trip to the ER after bleeding a decent bit landed me a few stitches.

Long story short, I bought some new Dockers the other day and the pocket shape was different than what I normally have in my jeans. My Endura wave got snagged in a weird position and then went right into my right hand middle finger to the bone. I didn't feel any pain but knew what occurred and cleaned it and poured on some liquid band aid and about 20 band aids so I could make it to the ER without making a mess.

Think the wave and the new khakis just felt I had too much blood in me.

Anyone else try the wave and have issues with it???

I know i know, operator error. Let's just say VG10 does it's job well.

I have not had any problems, but I can see potential for danger with the wave feature. The blade does pop out differently depending on the material and shape of your pocket. I suggest doing a slow motion "walk through" when you try a waved knife in a new pair of pants in order to avoid surprises. Have a speedy recovery, man. Lotta ER stories on BF tonight...

I bought both a waved endura or delica when they were first produced several years ago. I love those two knives and often EDC one or the other. Never had a problem with either one no matter what pants I'm wearing. However, the P'kal I used to own opened on me a couple of times when it got in the wrong position in my pocket. Even though I liked the knife, just to make sure I never accidentally got stabbed in the leg, I sold it.

Yep, same with my wave D4 and dockers (minus the cut). I have found the zip tie wave mod to be more consistent regardless of pants. Just rip it hard and it opens.

Yeah I haven't had any issues with the Endura with all my other jeans. I'll admit it, I normally just wear jeans and a t shirt cause I'm not required to wear anything nicer than that on a daily basis. Bought myself some 'adult' pants and then I went full retard. Basically the wave got caught on the soft loose liner inside the pocket so it engaged itself as my keys got stuck on the pocket clip.

Basically the stars and the planets aligned and I got to get the full VG-10 experience.

The gf made me go to the urgent care clinic so I wouldn't bleed out on my dinner. 13 band aids and some liquid band aid couldn't stop my flow. Guess she had a point.

My only issue with them is its a bit ugly and redundant to have a large wave feature and a spydiehole - the two could be combined, and in fact I am going to take a dremel to a couple of models to do just that.

Next time you cut yourself, suggest you wrap something tightly over the cut area - bandage if you have it, but any piece of material you don't care too much about will do. The pressure will be a lot more effective at stopping the bleeding than a band aid sandwich.

Yeah I was just at the gf's house downtown and the box of band aids was the first thing I saw after rinsing it off. I went to them quick cause I was losing blood quickly and wasn't trying to make a mess.

Sad thing is that I have a first aid kit I keep in my truck that could've probably handled the situation but I left it at my house the day before as I was putting all new fresh products in there since it's been in my truck a while.

Lesson learned.

Consider tightening down the pivot a bit. That'll make accidental openings in the pocket less likely. The looser the pivot is, the more likely they are to occur.

Haven't had an issue with any of the waved models yet (knock on wood), and I've been carrying a waved Emerson for four years. You definitely have to be more careful with them.

Yeah I mean I know this was all my fault, not that of the product. Just something I thought I'd share maybe as a warning.

Not gonna lie, this wouldn't have happened if I was carrying it the way I normally do in my jeans front pocket.

The Dockers have the larger pocket opening in the front like slacks typically do so I put the knife in my back pocket. The inside of the pockets have rather loose material so it was very easy for the wave to hook onto something without me wanting it to.

When I grabbed my key carabiner one of the key rings pulled the knife up by the pocket clip and the blade opened about half way inside the pocket and I managed to catch it with my finger just the right way.

The good thing about finger cuts is that normally once it hits the bone, it's done cutting.

From my personal experience, I found the the P'kal and Endura Emerson complement each other by having their own optimal performance with different types of pants. After practicing, experimenting, adjusting, and many torn up pocket edges, I decided on the P'kal for most denims, form-fitting pants, or pockets that ride close to the thigh crease, and the Endura Emerson for most cargo pants, dress pants (with a lot of care), or pants with vertical opening pockets. Draw failures and unintentional deployments are minimal when I stick to this rule of thumb, and I haven't had the misfortune of badly cutting myself yet.

Whenever I carry knives like these, I also carry QuickClot, a bandana/handkerchief, and duct tape in my EDC. You got to be prepared.

Like others have said before me, just go thru the motions and try it out with whatever you are wearing to get yourself comfortable with it.

Mine accident was simply my fault, not that of the wave. I was just curious if others have had any similar stories.

I'm sore today but I learned something in the process.

I actually sold my waved delica because of this. Nothing against the design, it works perfectly. I just couldn't get used to pulling the knife out of my pocket and expecting it to already be open, especially since I was rotating it with several other non-waved EDCs.

I picked up a waved Delica in an auction a few weeks ago. Just a few days later, my 15yo daughter was going on her summer camp, and needed a bigger knife than the little SAK she carries every day.

She took my brand-new Delica! Partly because of the cool opening technique. And she's carrying it today, and going on another summer camp in the morning that she lucked into with a cousin.

Crazy. And yes, that VG-10 can polish right up to a razor edge. Gots to be very careful.

You can't open a good bottle of beer with a zip tied Spyderco, but you can with the Wave models.

I sometimes find the wave hook getting caught too far down in the pocket in what I believe is the seam between the pocket fabric and the denim. That sometimes causes the knife not to open properly, but I really don't think there should be a real risk of injury as long as you just keep your finger clear of the blade path until you know it's locked open.

Yeah I've never had any issues with the wave when having it in my front right pocket like I carry all my other knives.

This was a one time back pocket carry issue and just wanted to share it with others as it was a simple mistake and my fault, not the knife's.

My keys have been carried on a carabiner near my back pocket for the last 15 years, just never had a knife in the back pocket as well. It just lined up perfectly and taught me a lesson.

I also learned my Urgent Care copay is only $60.

Also to keep myself from having an issue going forward, the Endura is sold and I'll be sticking to the same manual or arms when it comes to knives going forward. Thumb studs, flipper or Spyder hole for me from now on.
