Traditional and Modern pairings

My curret favorite is a Northwoods medium stockman. For a one hander, I almost always have my Sebenza.

Generally I have a traditional in my pants pocket and something Spyderco in my coat or backpack. Had a Sebenza but was compelled to sell it...those are nice but I'd rather have a wider variety, of less expensive knives. Plus I can't deny the genius of the opening hole.

I carry my new SS Case Stockman at all times, and add my Delica if I am doing something outdoors or working.

I usually have 2 knives on me at all times. One is always the Mini Grip in the picture. The other is always a traditional, like that pearl handled one in the pic.




That's the only modern knife I carry.

I have many more slipjoints than I do one-handed openers, so each modern is matched with a few old-timey knives. This is my favorite pairing though.

Very nice pair. I usually have my Bob T slipit and Vic pioneer. Been hard to beat my peanut though. One day I had my ZT301 and old chestnut bone CV peanut. Bizarre I know.

Thanks. The ZT and peanut combo isn't that bizarre. I used to have a SMF, and I would often carry it with a harness jack.

LOL. I'll have to disagree with you, have you looked at the stuff that Charlie and Elliot have on their desks? I gotta spend my money on something. I don't do drugs, gamble, smoke, womanize, and I barely drink. I don't even have a dog. Might as well have some fun and buy a few nice knives.

Not trying to go OT, but man, Blues does have some nice knives. Gonna have to post pics of my micarta Sebenzas and Case Bose coffin jack when I am back on my feet.

My new favorite traditional is a Case back pocket. I carry it every day along with a Spyderco Stretch in the front pocket. Both knives are similar size but I never sit and wish for something smaller.

I've really enjoyed this thread, probably because of the pictures of all the great classic/modern pairings. It's also comforting to see the posts from so many others who also carry multiple blades. And I also realize that I really need to start taking pictures; in a thread like this it makes all the difference.

My modern or classic carry blades are mostly commercial grade brands; nothing fancy, just effective and useful.

I generally carry modern knives of different configurations, and brands, choosing based on where I'm headed and what I think I might need to do. An assortment of Spydercos, Kershaws, Al Mars, some CRKTs, and even some cheap but good Taiwanese Colts, exchange places in my pockets, briefcase and packs (and also keychain) for EDC duty and field work. In the mix can go classic Remingtons, Winchesters, Bokers, Bulldogs, and a few old Marbles, when I need or want to carry multi-blades, or I think I might need to pull out and use a blade in a situation where a "tame" classic will raise no eyebrows. Generally the pattern will be a whittler, which I prefer, or a trapper, but I also have a few congress knives which are brought along when I want to carry less cutlery (just a couple of knives, not counting the money clip). The odd peanut, Barlow or jack, finds their way in once in a while. And, of course, Victorinoxs do show up frequently.

Spydercos and Kershaws are probably the most frequently carried, and they're often paired with a Boker or Remington whittler or trapper. Many times the brand, pattern, and mix are chosen on a whim, but they're generally selected with care. Among the classics, the Bulldogs are chosen infrequently, not because they can't handle all possible tasks, but because they're very prized (and remind me of my long gone pitbulls). The Al Mars also probably get less carry time than other moderns, but only because they're also highly prized.

When in the garden or doing yard work, a classic, generally a pruner or hawksbill but sometimes a sheepsfoot, will do all the work, but there's always a modern blade clipped to my belt or pocket.
