    Historically a "short sword" was often just another word for knife.

    Are.. knives.. mammals?

    This debate reminds me of people trying to determine what is "real" heavy metal and what isn't. Not to mention what the definition of art is. Apparently, a very important defining feature of a swan was for a very long time the fact that it is white. Until some idiot went along and found out that there are actually black swans. The terms dagger and sword usually indicates that you're talking about a weapon, but that doesn't mean the word knife can't be used to describe a weapon. Finding clear definitions of things is often very hard. I think people sometimes tend to overemphasize the importance of putting a name on everything.
