I believe the Commander line was post-Mann Edge Tool Co. takeover of Collins so post-1966.
I just snagged this Collins Commander. I hope its not an imposter. This is the nicest axe head that I have ever bought. It has been sharpened maybe once, and the poll has never struck anything. How old is this one? How do you think a 30" or 32" octagon would look with her?

Unique pattern on that one with the bevels and all. How heavy is it?
I like that one too.
I would probably go with a 32".
The Commander does have a really unique shape. I love it. It weighs 3.21#. The eye seems to be a little fat toward the bit. Not sure a regular handle will work. Here are some more measurements and pics.

Where do you get your octagon hafts, if you don't mind me asking. I can't seem to find any.

House Handle will do them if you request 'octagonal shaping' in the comments box.
Their communication isn't great. I received no confirmation of an order I placed. Then just when I had given up on it the axe handles were on my doorstep. And they're very nice handles. I will order again despite the lack of communication.
i agree, Pegs. the dude was sarcastic when he answered my questions on e-mail. very pleased with the work, so it's ok![]()
My self and a friend just made a roadtrip to House Handle and were really treated well there by everyone, Its a family owned business that employees about a dozen people and they bend over bacdkwards to make you happy
with their product and hand picked a bunch of handles for us, I bought 17 and my pal got over a dozen.
Ask for aa grade and they hand pick em for you for better grain and so on.
They are a good company run by very nice people.
