Customs & Border Protection. Shipping a folder to NYC?

I have recently bought a Shirogorov flipper and they shipped it to my relative in Ukraine. Now before I have him ship it here. Does anybody know if it is safe/legal to ship a folder/flipper/4" knife to New York City (local knife law is kind of ambiguous when it comes to folders)? Do not want to risk it seized by customs & border protection. Thanks.

I'd crank down the pivot on it so it can't be snapped open. NYC is very "liberal" in what they classify as a "gravity knife"

Shipping to and owning are fine in NYC. It's carrying in public that's tough. General statement, of course.

i live in NYC and i am telling you its safe. There is a large misconception that your going to get in trouble shipping a folder to NYC. Its illegal to send autos over state borders. it may be illegal to carry the flipper, but that is not your problem. make sure the mail is insured though!

If you are nervous at all have it shipped to elsewhere in the states first and then move it into NYC via the mail. The only place you can run into any problems is brining it across the border directly into the city it may get come grief. I live on the opposite side of the state south of Buffalo and have never had a problem. I am sure if you dont have anyone else in the states to send it to first you can find a trustowrth member on these forums to assist you in your transfer.

If you determined to ship directly into the city from overseas I would suggest like others have mentioned tightening the pivot down to the point it takes two hands to open.

Customs & Border Protection is a federal agency. It has has zero authority or ability to enforce a loose interpretation of a state law. And law enforcement entities within NY state that do have authority to enforce NY's knife laws have no ability or authority to examine or intercept mail, as that requires a federal warrant. And for that matter, the loose goofy interpretation is for carry only, not ownership. You're fine; knife sellers that won't ship to NY are just paranoid morons with no idea how the law works (judging from some rather idiotic conversations I have had with many of them).

The only thing CBP will stop at the border are true button-operated switchblades or the [now largely extinct] ballistic knife.

There is no law that prevents you from shipping knives from UA but you never know whit UA customs. I will send with private shipper EMS or DHL they should have a streamlined tunnel through UA customs.

Thank you for all of the replies. Just to be on the safe side I wrote to CPB and here is their reply:

"Thank you for contacting the CBP INFO Center online. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) appreciates that you took the time to email us with your inquiry.

As long as this is not a spring loaded or switchblade knife, you are generally allowed to import it for personal use.

It was my pleasure to provide this information to you."
