Lars Monsen has done some good shows, and is less well known. Here's one I haven't seen.
He has a good series in Norway aswell.

One of my favorites is "Happy People: A Year In The Taiga", directed by Dmitry Vasyukov and produced by Werner Herzog. The film depicts the life of the people in the village of Bakhtin along the Yenisei River in Siberian Taiga.
