@ puukkoman: The Anchorknife is a great knife with a great tradition. Made by several manufacturers during the time (Lütters, Löwenmesser etc) The variations they have a great, I think.

@ gobbo: They are nice working knives, the strong spring is giving a safe tool. I also looked at the sheepfoot with bone scales. Maybe with the next order...

@ nate: I was surprised by the price, too. Especially after I got the knife. A pricey knife with all the specs is a big deal, I think. I paid much more for worse finished knives.

What I really like on Otter Messer is the family-like appearance of the company. They seem to be great for the price and the steel is very good for sharping. It´s no 1095. I think it´s XC75 or CX75 (I don´t know the term) - the Mercator knife is also made by them and I heard/read on german knife forum, that they use the same carbon steel on every carbon-steel knife. Which is their stainless, I have idea. Maybe someone can tell this.

I like the Otter etch too! An animal I've never seen in the wild unfortunately.

Does the fixed blade have a fleur-de-lis on the handle? I've heard that it is a German Boy Scout knife though I don't know if that is true.
Even though the Boy Scouts of America does not prohibit fixed blades there hasn't been an official BSA fixed blade at least since 1960's, maybe even earlier I'm not sure.

Otter makes a good knife, I almost pulled the trigger on that wharncliffe knife when I order a few of their knives..now I wish I would have Congrats on the blades, especially that stag one, very nice

I really like the wharnie, it may finally push me over the edge to get some Solingen made knives. You'd think they are easy to come by as a neighbour to your south, but here the stores are just filled with Victorinox, Wenger and some cheapos.

As Andi said, it certainly looks like it (Pfadfinder are the German Boy Scouts). I had a similar one, unfortunately the tang broke due to some abuse.
Does anyone know the origins of the pattern? Did they exist before WWII already, or was the Hitler Youth knife the origin?

About that fixed blade... as already said, it´s a lilly (maybe fleur-de-lis - I don´t speak one word french ) in the handle and this is one of the versions that are used by the German Boy Scouts (Pfadfinder similar to pathfinder). I believe it was not in that version before 1933, because the whole design looks like at would have been from this area. I own an original dress-bayonett of the 98K carabine from WWII and it looks a little like the boy scout knife. The design might haven´t change since that time. Even the sheath is made of metal - as well as the sheath on the 98K bayonett. For sure from 1933 til 1945 there was propably no lilly in the handle.

I EDCed the whanie bladed today, and it feels great in pocket. I didn´t like the factory edge, so when I came home from work, I reprofiled it at roundabout 20° Not it´s like a razor. The used steel is great - I hope they used the same steel like on the Mercator (I believe though).

@ will: The otter etch is really neat. I like that animal very much - unfortunatelly it will dissappear under the patina. But however....

The hitler jugend knife was designed after the 98K carbine bayonet. It was designed to be a fighting knife originally, but after the war many were produced with a fleur de lis instead of a swastika and used in several countries to be used by boy scouts and pathfinders.

Perhaps you're looking in the wrong stores? In many "outdoor and sports" shops here there are no carbon steel knives to be found, let alone solingen made, but in the home improvement and gardening stores they are the only knives sold. Those don't have the otter print but have the same tang stamps and are sold as "working knives".

Hmmm, now to be able to find/afford a Pfadfinder for my Scout collection. The German Boy Scout fixed blade would be awesome to have along with my Helle Boy Scout and Mora "Scout". Except I can only carry them to our meetings and non-Council/District events since fixed blades aren't welcome, even with leaders.

Yes, the Jagdnicker is made by Linder. I just read at a german knife magazine about them. They made their knives for a long time right now. A very traditional manufacturer from Germany. Once they said, they let make their in China, but that´s not the truth. I´m very glad about owning the Jagdnicker, especially for the bavarian clothing in combination

@gobbo: Yes, it can be bought there directly. But it´s on "Abverkauf" - that means that it´s on a "sale out". So it might not be longer made, but I don´t know by 100 % (hoping that I´m wrong). If the knife is wanted to buy; you should hurry.

Well, bad news friends, it looks as if the Ebony Wharncliffe, the "Webbermesser" is now plastic scaled. I have been trying to chase one down and finally got in contact with someone at otter-messer, and plastic scaled versions is all they have.

Oh well....
