    The Way I Do Business

I`ve been reading horror stories about some knifemakers who don`t keep their promises, so I thought I would take a minute to explain how I conduct my business.

    1) I do not want a deposit up front, I never know from day to day if a problem might come up. It`s easier to not have to return money after I have it.

    2) I don`t overschedule orders. I would rather underschedule and get your knife to you sooner, than overschedule and be late.

    3) If for some unforeseen reason I will be late, I will contact you and let you know the reason. For example, one special handle is on backorder, I contacted the customer to let him know as soon as I found out.

    4) I always keep in contact with the customer by email, letting them know when it will be started, and when it will ship. I also contact them the month before the order is due to confirm it is still wanted.

    5) I do all of the work in house. Each knife is ground one at a time, no "precut" blanks.

I hope this instills confidence, that if you order a knife from me, you will get it!

I don't think it'll be a surprise to hear that I've never had any problems or concerns when buying JK knives, the support all over the forum for you and your knives was very confident when first found the forum and after a few purchases myself I can say it wasn't misplaced.

Thanks for once again being so mindful of your customers though John, I'd offer any new potential customers to ask those who have bought and keep on buying around here as well, I don't like many things more then I like talking about Jk knives after all

    I second this.

I want to add that I think that the fact that you do buy materials up front without any responsibility on the part of the person ordering has led to a lot of frustration for you. I see it in the frequent canceled orders.

I know things come up in people's lives, and that is just part of all of us being humans.

However, I think if you are ordering a knife and plan to have it made, then it should be part of the program to send a non-refundable up-front payment for the materials. In this way, you would never have to refund money, and you also would never be stuck for materials for a knife when someone needs to cancel the order.

Requiring that the materials be paid at the time you start on the knife, and that this is non-refundable, puts the responsibility on the buyer for the transaction once it has been commenced. This is how it should be.

Dealing with you has always been a pleasure, and I have always recieved a top-quality product right when you said it would be ready (or before in some cases).

Every knife I've ordered has been finished on time or early (not that it would even matter to me to wait a bit longer for a JK!)

John, it never occurred to me to doubt you would deliver on your end- I have only sent deposits to you b/c I want you to know I'm not going to back out either. That being said, how ever you prefer to schedule/collect payment is A-OK with me!

I've only ordered a couple knives from John, but my experiences have been great. I even tried to pay him up front, but he wouldn't have it.

There's no other maker that I would speak higher of than John.

The way you do business and the way you treat people in general is why I'm proud to have you as a friend. Your knifemaking is excellent but your friendship and customer relations are even better.

At one time I think I owned about 20 of John's knives. That should speak for itself. This is an honorable man. Rare indeed in this country when greed seems rampant. Keep up the good work my friend!

I have never had a problem with John's ordering process and have always been happy with the product and delivery times. However I also agree with the others who recommend an up front non-refundable deposit for materials as I know John has been burned more than once here through cancellations.

I've purchased 25 knives from John - with two more ordered - and not one has been delivered late (several were delivered early). If John says he'll have the knife done by a specific date, the knife will be done by that date (and you will love the knife).

In addition, John is not kidding when he says that he will be in contact with you. Any question is answered in a very timely manner (usually within a couple hours of the email being sent to him).

There is a specific reason I have purchased so many knives from John - his work is fantastic and his customer service is the absolute best. You will not be disapointed when ordering a knife from John. I know from first-hand experience.

John...i'll be honest...i see many makers' knives that i like on this forum. And, many do good work. In short, i could get quality knives from many makers.

However, with that said, it is "you" that keeps me coming back and ordering JK Knives.

As a consumer, i get to choose who i do business with. I think i have said it before....but, if i am going to be spending my hard-earned money, i want it to go to an honorable company. And John, it is always a pleasure sir.

thanks for the note. keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the kind words, I try hard to keep everyone satisfied. I will say one thing about the emails I send concerning orders. I have actually lost orders because of them, been told I was being a pest.

some people are young and immature. I prefer over contact to under contact. at least that way you can know what's going on. I have always appreciated your communication and the wait list updates.

My sentiments exactly. I hope to be a loyal customer as soon as some free $ clears up. I have only read great things about you and your post clarifies that all I have read is true.

i'm with ky and grunt. i like communication and since i spend a great deal of my time online, i appreciate when a knifemaker contacts me and let's me know what's up. nothing is more annoying than having to chase down the status of an order whether it's been 3 months or 3 weeks. i respect JK's customer relations skills. what's even better is that john is always upfront and never has a string of excuses. he won't take on more than he can handle and like everyone has said, gets your knife done in a timely manner, if not early. this (and his knives) are what keeps me on this forum and on his order list.

oh and he always answers questions about the particulars and details--which is also a + for me since i'm not super knife construction savvy.
