Anyone Jailbreak a Kindle Fire?

I'd like to look at jailbreaking my Kindle Fire, so I can install third party apps, and use Google Play.

Has anyone tried this?

I Googled it and found a few who have, but one of the guys who tried it rendered his useless.

I poked around a bit, and I'm not too keen on turning my Kindle into a brick, even though they say it can be fixed.

If I could get the thing to 'pop up' the login box on a couple of secure websites, I'll be a happy guy.

I just had a thought. Most, if not all mobile browsers, including the stock browser, have pop-up blockers. On the stock browser, it's in the Advanced Settings. On Dolphin, go More -> Settings -> Web Content.

Turn off the pop-up blocker and try those sites again.

I can't speak to the Kindle Fire, but I did it to my wife's Nook Tablet. It was moderately easy to do. As Grubbster mentioned, XDA is about the best site for how-to's on that sort of thing. I also found that the process got more refined and easy as more people did it. Any glitches and problems were discovered on the way, and then rev'd into the process. Most of the people that end up bricking their devices don't follow the steps properly.

Sure, you could brick it. But you could also drop it by accident and brick it that way also.

Exactly. Rootzwiki is good too, better than XDA for some devices since XDA is so huge, info can get lost quickly in threads with 1000's of posts.

To the OP, you're going to want to read up on android rooting and make sure you have some basic skills with Java and terminal command lines before you get in too far. Yes, you can easily brick your device if you don't know what you're doing and don't follow instructions, but in general, the basic process for gaining root access is usually pretty much just that, basic. Follow directions EXACTLY and you shouldn't have any problems. I've rooted every android device that has passed through my hands, and even tried my hand at a bit of slightly more complicated development and theme building and basically learned as I went. Be careful though, android development can seem like a foreign language if you're not familiar with some of the terminology, so take your time, read up, and have fun. Good luck, the kindle fire can be transformed into a pretty sweet full blown android tablet with fairly minimal work or skills involved.

Looks greek to me. I don't understand what I need to do to get started.

If I could find a step by step tutorial, I'd try it.

I'd like to get Chrome installed, and maybe get Jellybean on the thing. It would save me from buying a new tablet.
