Case Hunter....Dad's.....

It is bittersweet to discover some of your dad's things once you are put to the task of clearing out his things due to health. You discover your roots; your likes, your dislikes, .....your foundational world views. Dad taught me that knives are tools before they. Would ever be weapons. This Case Hunter was discovered deep in my dad's personal belongings/gear. I almost felt as if I was intruding on his privacy. However, that is because I am still dealing with the fact that dad is never coming back to his home. We will have to rent it out. Anyways, the knife was stored inside the leather, so there was green paste all over it. I did polish it off with Flitz. It is gentle and does a great job knocking off the crud. The tip of the drop point is broken, but I doubt I will fix it by grinding it down. It has his initials as well as his driver's license # engraved in the bolsters. L It is something my dad did to all his valuables. There is no better place to show this than here.

I cleaned it up,oiled it and store it away safe. It will be passed down and maybe used by my kids, to honor traditions of a great generation. Am i being nostalgic? You bet your sweet bippie!

That's one of the sad duties of life, the cleaning up the remnants of a loved ones life. The objects are repositories of memories of that person and his times. And if you're very lucky, the memories of times you had together. I've got a small box of bitter sweet pocket knife memories, and to me, they are priceless, no matter what the old price book says. I have long wondered how some essence of the man remains in an object, but it does. An old rifle, a pocket knife, an old pipe.

That's a very valuable folder you have there. I too get sentimental over material stuff. I shouldn't, but certain items can help me conjure up memories of loved ones. My favorite is an old, rusty Jim Bowie brand Stockman that my Grandfather gifted (along with a Winnie 94 in 30-30) me when I was 15 or so. I still have it. He always was and is always giving me things of his and has implied that he isn't planning to go anywhere anytime soon (his words) so he's giving me my "inheritance" early he tells me.

Thanks all. Dad is on a slight upturn in that he is talking a little bit and he seems more lucid. I know he is in good care, which is very comforting.

Sorry to hear about your dad's health.

That's a great knife. In my humble opinion, one of the best patterns made by Case. I traded for one in high school, and Case re-bladed it for me in 2005; they turned it into a new knife again. My son will inherit it one day.
