What do you think of your Al Mar Eagle?

Anyone have an Al Mar Eagle and wants to share thoughts?
I'm considering buying one. I have a SERE folder and like it.
I noticed they have a heavy duty version out now and wonder if that's worth it.

I have a Falcon and Hawk Ultralight. They are both very good knives. Fit and finish is excellent. They are the FFG plain edge ones and their cutting geometry is very good.

The Eagle is the largest of the three and I would assume that it is just as good as its little brothers.

I love the vintage AL MAR Eagles.. With micarta and cocobolo.. Try to buy the vintage ones that says SEKI JAPAN or even more collectable USA SEKI JAPAN.
The MOKI are nice too but they are newer and will not hold value like the older ones.. If u are patient u can score a older one for 150 compared to a newer one for 130-200

I had a falcon ultralight that I loved. I was a bit put off by the Aus 8 but that only because I let the talk of supersteels bias me. One I had the knife in hand and used it, it was awesome. The geometry is great and the knife disappears into your pocket. Unfortunately mine was stolen but I am always on the lookout for a good buy on another.

Oh yeah for sure! Make a long story short.. Mr.AL MAR i believe 100% of his knives were comission in SEKI JAPAN by a company called G.Sakai and I believe there was another company.. Well sometime in the late 80's and 90's G.Sakai started producing AL MARS knives WITHOUT AL MARS permission and AL MAR was not getting anything for his hard work and etc.. So I am not sure when but Mr. AL MAR in the 90's or maybe his partner Gary Fadden moved companies to MOKI.. I consider MOKIs produced knives after AL MAR passing and do not have any collectable value to"me".. I like the golden years of AL MAR KNIVES CO. however the MOKI ones are made just as good from what I understand.. I have own only 1 newer AL MAR MOKI and it was a SERE 2000.. It was top notch production knives better than a SOG or other..

From a collectable standpoint and if you patient you can get a vintage SEKI JAPAN AL MAR off ebay for the same price or little more than new.. Remember Mr. AL MAR is in the KNIFE HALL OF FAME.. There is a reason for it! He was the man with a awesome legacy, plus he could back it up with his American patriotism.. Nothing against the new company, but my heart is in the older stuff!

I own an Al Mar Eagle (Classic) with Cocobolo scales and I really like it. It's slim, rather lightweight and comes with a leather pouch to wich you can clip a small torch light.

It looks like a true genteman's knife but I wouldn't hesitate to put it to heavy use.

The AUS 8 of the blade holds an edge really well, the heat temper seems to be spot on.

Fit finish are nearly perfect.

There is only a small issue: When I dropped the knife once onto a stone floor the back spring chipped slightly (1mm). I could be wrong, but to me me it seems as if the spring of the back lock is hardened, too. I remember reading something similar about the Sere 2000. But as I said, I could be wrong.

Anyway, this isn't really a problem for me. I carry the Eagle regularly and would buy one again if I ever lost it.

I'm really thinking about picking up the HD model. I did notice the thumbstud on some seem to be double sided and finished on a lathe while earlier models have a flat faced stud (on only one side?) and checkered.
The HD model has steel liners and that seems to be the biggest difference at a cost of an extra ounce.
I am not at all worried about collector value. I stopped buying collectors years ago - all my knives are users.

My main thought on the Ultralight Eagle is that it is perfect the way it is. The ultralight's size to weight ratio is it's main advantage over other knives.

The HD version is going to be a completely different knife. While I am sure the HD will be a great knife, it will not have that absolute advantage over the competition (size/weight ratio).

Got my eagle in 1987- yellow micarta. Carried it for fifteen years- still do every once in a while. Great knife.

I have the ultralight eagle and love it. At 2.0 ounces you don't even know it is in your pocket.

i have an ultralight eagle talon, great knife if youre searching for something fullsize thats thin lightweight and disappears when clipped to your pocket. theyre stiff as hell when you first get them though and need to be broken in.
