I almost got screwed by this. They wanted me to verify my visa card number,

~AND~

my ATM pin code... I thought something was fishy, so I checked the properties of the so-called PayPal sender address, and it was...

yes, playpal - not paypal.

This is where they provided a link that obviously didn't come through with the cut/paste. I had to fill out all my info. and when I got to the ATM pin number, is when I got suspicious.

Once you complete all of the checklist items, your case will be reviewed by one of our Account Specialists. We will send you an email with the outcome of the review.

I forwarded this to the fraud center for PayPal. I hope they catch these scums.

btw never just follow links as they can be faked also
most like paypal and ebay dont ask for your info over email but will ask you to go to the home page and sign in and take care of things that way

Get Gmail....they verify senders claimed addresses against accepted addresses of that IP....and flag as such. Every scam email ive seen, gmail has flagged and told me it is not from who it seems....lemmie know if you want an invite to the beta, i have 100

I have worked in the computer / IT industry for the past 15 years and I have seen alot of scams popping up on the 'net. No company will ask you to verify account information, weather it would be through email, instant message, or a website. If they already have your information then there is no need to "verify" the information. Make sure that the website that you are ordering through is connected through a secure connection. The easiest way to verify this is to look at the address in the address bar. It should start with "https://" and NOT "http://". If the "s" is not in the address bar chances are that it is not secure. Also, in IE and I believe the other browsers display it as well there is a LOCK icon located in the lower left of the status bar. If you double-click on the lock it will display the properties of the security certificate. Click on details then click on subject in the list. This will identify the website that is using the certificate. For instance if you are on "ebay" and you double click the lock it should display the URL that the security certificate was issued to. If the certificate displays something other than "ebay.com" or something with "ebay.com" in the address then it is more than likely the certificate was a fraud. If the certicate is certified for another URL but is being used on a different URL IE will display an error and I am sure that other browsers do this as well. Just be cautious as to who you send your information. In this case if it were really PayPal then I would call PayPal myself to verify that they really need this information and more than likely they would tell you it is a scam. I hope this info helps others just be careful.

I agree with butcher. NEVER use an email link. If you are not sure, email their service department directly from their site. Nothing is urgent enough that you can't wait for a few days for a response.

I get a few of those every week

The links always resolve to bogus sites (not paypal.com), it's easy to see in the status bar when you move the mouse pointer over them.
Sometimes they get quite subtle but most of the time it's obvious. Every time you get an email from PayPal, Ebay, Amazon, etc ..., do NOT follow the links but connect to your account directly and after cleaning the browser's cache. If it was real, a message will await you there.

the closest one that almost got me was an email that looked like an E-bay
sent page
with an "so it looked " email from one of their customers you know the
one asking for information about one of your products,

she said she was 79 years old and lost the auction location for a wheel chair she really needed, and thought it was me that had it listed, of coarse it
wasn't me
but I thought I'd be a good type of guy and help her out.
she had an item number that was "of course" bogus I found out.

I tired looking it up and didn't find anything on it,, there was a reply link on the page and I was about to click on it and thought for some reason

to look a bit more at the email

the e-mail itself was a url link and it would have taken me to a destructive site I assume, that would have down loaded crap on my putter,,
it was not Ebays site ,,,
I replied,,, nice try a$$hole..and sent it to spoof@ebay.com they confirmed it wasn't them..

Another thing is if you ever do banking on line or use your credit card, as soon as you log out of that site, go into your internet properties and physically clean out your temporary internet files and cookies.
My browser is set to do it automatically but it is not reliabe.
Things can sit there and get picked up by spyware or some SOB can hack into your tinbrain and find this stuff if you have a permanent connection. They randomly type in IP addresses and invariably find someone. Silent home invasion.

Just to add to Miden's comment, I would recommend that you have a firewall on your computer. By this, I mean a hardware firewall such as a router for those that have broadband. A router in its most simple form is a firewall and will not allow outside connections to computers that are on the inside of the router/firewall. They are inexpensive around $45 on the net and can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. I would recommend a D-Link as they are inexpensive and reliable.
