Question on SOG Bowie

I recently picked up one of the SOG Bowies with the 5th Special Forces crest on the blade and sheath. Both the guard and pommel are 2 toned blue/polished steel, being blue on the flats and polished on the sides. Is this the way the knife was produced or has someone modified it? For all of you that have never handled one of thses, well its a sweetheart, these rival the originals we had in Nam.

I can't speak for all of them, but mine is just blued, as were all the rest I have seen.
If you like that one, you like the Trident, I actually prefer the Trident, it is a sweet looking knife. More so than in the pictures; the grind lines are incredible.

Hi Jake,

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. The bluing is intended to be equal on all parts of the crossguard and pummel. If there are faded parts, it has most likely been buffed.

Can I take it by your comment that you had one of the original Bowies in Vietnam? I like to talk to SOG vets to get their impression of our version of this knife. Sounds like you feel it's real comparable. Maybe you can comment more on your thoughts? Also a bit about how you used it in the field? That would be greatly appreciated.

Yes Ron, I "inherited" one of the originals in 1969. It had been passed to me by someone going home and it was well worn by the time I got it...beat to hell and still going. I used it for everything from a tent stake in a pinch to butchering a small pig we found and decided would try to roast on stand down. I never used it in anger or for defense and passed it on to one of my squad before I went home as it had been passed on to me. I hope he used it as much as I did and passed it on as well...most of all I hope he made it home. BTW your version is a lot prettier and a bit shorter I think. And Ron, I'm not an SOG vet, just an ex grunt from the 11th Infantry Brigade, hard telling how many hands that knife passed through before I had it.
