Best Knives for the Malaysian Jungle

Just wanted to get some of your opinions on the best knife for camping trips in Malaysia...

Right now i've got a couple of stuff but am thinking of getting some more stuff ...

got a gerber legend and a leatherman wave, a Fallkniven S1, a cheapo Buck 110 folding hunter and an old SAK that i've been using since my scouting days...

Finally got some extra cash and thought of spending it on knives...

Cold Steel Kukri LTC
Gransfors Small Forest Axe/ Wildlife Hatchet
Fallkniven F1

Any ideas on what else i could add to my buying spree...hehe...

Also what do you guys use to sharpen your knives...right now i'm just using a DMT diafold fine/extra fine...but am thinking of getting a coarse one that i might need if i get the axe...

OH yeah...also...i wanna get a really nice tac knife...maybe something from Benchmade...or some other good brands...but no customs...too expensive and i'll end up just keeping it and not using it...any suggestions?

Man...sorry that i've got so many questions...it's just damn exciting that i've found malaysians with a passion for knives...my family thinks i'm wasting money and am some sort of serial killer...hehe...

my take --

neck knife - camillus cuda arc lite (cheap and reliable)

small camp knife - fallkniven H1, Spyderco Moran FB02 drop point, Spyderco Temperance, Swedish Moras, Benchmade Outbounder and the Sakai Outdoor kitchen knife..

large ones - Becker Knife and Tool CU7, BK-9, Fallkniven A-1

allrounders - parang, BK Patrol Machete

Welcome Iskandar! Glad you found your way around here!

It's ok to be excited....i can still remember those days when i first started collecting....everything seems new and exciting.

For big knives i would suggest the Fallkniven F1, the convex grind profile makes it cut forever. On the over kill side, i'd recommend khukris...these mama-jamas will clear forest path like nothing....oohh and not forgetting our "national" knife: the Parang. Of course, the parang we own are not those $15 type found in "kedai runcit" but instead what we have here are those from Pahang's Batu kikir hand made beauties!

For sharpening wise, you can't go wrong with the Spyderco 204 set.

Tac folders? if you are looking for affordable and user type brands, try Spyderco, Al mars, Benchmade or Emersons. These knives will not burn a hole in your pocket and they make great daily carry companion. I personally carry a Spyderco Tim Zowada model: small, scary sharp and excellent made.

I hope the above will give you some ideas as to what to buy. Trust me, sit back and relax...don't hurry into a purchase. The hunt is sometimes more fun than the actual kill.

Eric.

well...i took the plunge and ordered a Benchmade 721 Mel Pardue...seems like a good knife and no bad reviews about it...

i also ordered a cold steel ltc kukri...thought it looked cool...and should be able to use it for light chopping and clearing...

didn't think of buying a bigger kukri 'cos i thought i'd get a gransfors axe...maybe next i'll buy one of the original kukris from HI...

i've still got a bit more money to buy one more knife so still thinking about it...or maybe i'll get some sharpeners...

damn those benchmade knives...originally didn't plan to buy 'em but they just looked too good...that was a big part of the budget...heheh

man...it's no fun being a student...takes you ages to save money to buy anything...i thought i wanted to get a surround sound system...but instead i bought knives...

Point44, in my humble opinion, for camping trips in Malaysia, you should observe what kind of knives are used by villagers who live in riverine areas or kampungs.

Of course, most of what my other colleagues have suggested are good.
The parang (or golok) is the standard knife, more or less.

A smaller about 4-inch knife, would come in very useful. And a Swiss knife would be good as spare.

Then, improvise as you go along. You may learn a thing or two from those who are wise in the way of the jungle, or semi-jungle.

Watch out for the mosquitos and leeches!

welcome to da jungle..

Dude ~ Mosquitoes, snakes, crocs, lizards and blood-sucking leeches and also not to mention - f****** insects are the sorta critters that'll greet you in da jungle..
And speaking about observation, most kampung people would use their parangs as the all-in-one tool. In most cases, I'm most tightly "watched" dude in my excursions and I had lost count of the number of folders and fixed blade knives that I've given away on the trail. Length, blade material, manufacturer, blade geometry and type of blade is a simple matter of personal preference..

i was so excited waiting for the postwoman today...
Finally got a BM721...smooth opening...nice lock that axis thingy...
flicks open easily...it's the best folder i've got right now...but i don't think i'll bring it camping or anything like that...

also got my LTC kukri...a few people said that it'd be light but i think the weight's just nice...any heavier and i'd be tired lugging it around...for clearing i think it'd do the job just nicely...and some chopping as well...

so right now i'm happy with both purchases and i would definitely get another benchmade folder...and maybe add a trailmaster as well...but that will have to wait till my savings goes up again...ehhehe...

can't wait to use my kukri...woo hooo...chop chop chop...

I think this would be what i'd carry...well, not that i have much choice...

LTC kukri
Fallkniven S1
Gerber Legend
Black Diamond Headtorch

and maybe add an axe when possible...not buying it yet though 'cos it'd just mess up the house...so will have to wait for just before the holidays...

Sorry for the late reply.
I was talking to Swandi from www.valiantco.com the other day he is now based in australia. He has a great site of the asian style knives. I have one of his large knives. I think he said his best seller was a survival golok or it may have been a survival something else. he is now back at work catching up with orders. I'm sure he could give some good tips. I would sugest that the traditional blades he sells would have been developed over many years of use. Sorry I am a bit unsure of the names he said many different asian names and I confused them.
