Solvang Knife Show

Just back from Solvang, CA. knife show which was held at the Royal Scandanavian Hotel in the main ballroom over the weekend. I walked in and directly in front of me at a table putting togther a Sebenza was Chris Reeves, at the next table was Alton D'Holder, at the next table was Bud Nealy with his entire collection, at the end of the row was Ernie Emerson and around the corner, sitting behind a single lovely fb was Bob Lum. And it went on and on. Jeez.

In the pm visited the Santa Ynez Valley wineries and that night on to the Chumash Indian Casino. A nice weekend.

I love that show. Went last year but missed it this year. One of my Fav's and one of the ONLY good shows in CA. Especially now since we don't get blade show west no more!

Saw some great stuff there. Missed out on a lot though getting there on Saturday.

I loved Warenski's dagger.

Yeah, I got there Saturday also and apparently there was a lot gone by then. Frank Centofante was a total peach. Such a nice guy. It seemed like a lot of the older guys there weren't so much. Chris Reeve looked sorta pissed off and wouldn't talk to me (I'm guessing it was my age. What would some punk kid know about knives, eh?) And on a lesser extent, there was Gil Hibben also. Lots of beautiful pieces there, though. I was a little disappointed to see that some of the bowies I was lusting after on www.knifeart.com were so huge. Could hardly get my hand around some of them.
For me, the Highlight was definately Yoshindo Yoshihara. He seemed pretty stoaked that I was able to converse with him a bit in Japanese. I picked up his book and he signed it. Can't read a word though because it's all in Kanji.
Beautiful stuff, though.

The Solvang show is really alot of fun. I got there on Thursday and so I was ready for the Friday opening.

I was about the 20th person in line at 9:30 for a 11:00 AM "preview hour". Everyone of the first 20 were looking to get a Bogie. He had 16 knives and they sold within 5 minutes. The crowd was not alot of fun. He definetly needs to do a lottery.

I went to Bob Lums table and there were a couple of folders left but these were not my style. Tony's knife is awesome as was Bob's new "Chinese Sabre tip Fighter". I ordered three knives from Bob and look forward to my first Lums.

Ernie Emerson had 15 knives and a lottery. I got lucky and was able to score a Viper MV3, his largest Viper and my first Viper.

Some amazing knives overall. The makers are invited to this show and the waiting list to get in is long. You really see the best that these makers have to offer. Especially liked the Velardes, Hartsfields, Ankroms, Friedleys, Sawbys
and S.R. Johnsons.

Great seeing some old firiends and making some new ones.

It sounds like you had best pre-arrange with Phil Boguszewski if you want a Bogi. I wonder how many individuals bot the 16 pieces? I've heard that one person can scoop up a whole season's collection from a custom maker.

I would have been disappointed to find all 16 blades sold when I arrived.
