Strange kind of green coating on Seal pup elite

Hi everyone,

I've had my SOG Seal Pup Elite for a few months now. It has always been kept in the cardboard slip and plastic bag (unsealed) it came in. I just took it out to have a look at it and there is some kind of green coating on it? Can anyone tell me what this is and if I could get rid of it without harming the black coating? I've tried wiping it off with wet tissue and could only get a bit of it off.

Does it feel oily or greasy?
It might be packing grease to prevent humidity from causing erosion, but I'm not sure.
Maybe the packing grease has oxidized and become "gummy" and turned thicker and green? Again, I can' say for sure.

If it is grease, you can easily remove it with a solvent, such as lighter fluid or mineral spirits.
this shouldn't harm the black coating.

That is very interesting I have never seen anything like that before.

You should be able to get it off using a cleaner or solvent of some sort. The coating is pretty durable and I don't think you can hurt by cleaning it. If you are really concerned about it please feel free to send the knife in to us for inspection. For details see our warranty info page.

Nah its not oily or greasy. It wasn't there before. It doesn't feel like a separate coating. Kinda like the black coating turned green. I tried mineral turpentine but it did not work. Thanks anyway to you both.

If anybody else knows what it is, please let me know.

I have a SEAL PUP ELITE and the graphics, i.e. lettering, seem wrong to me. Mine says "SOG" in large letters with "Seal Pup Elite" in smaller letters underneath (just as it is on their website.) May I ask where you purchased yours? Is this an earlier model? I don't mean to offend in any way. Just curious, as I've never seen those graphics before.

Alfisti, I noticed that too when I visited the SOG website recently. There are many pictures of the Seal Pup Elite with the same lettering as my one on the internet. http://images.google.com.au/images?c...=1&sa=N&tab=wi
I think you are right tho, that the one I have pictured is probably an older model. I got it on ebay.

The logo/lettering on the knives was changed about 3-4 months. The image above if the older style lettering. The newer ones will have the SOG logo and the name of the product in small lettering below the logo. See website for current marking. So johnu2 has a knife with older marking.

I think it looks kinda cool with the green as well. Especially now that the black and green seems to have perfectly "melded" together after I tried removing it with mineral turp. So I gave up trying to remove it
