Another FFBM make-over!

Well inspired by soup_monger's thread I decided to jump into the great unknown.

I'll try to detail this as much as I can. But this is a first so... Here we go.

(1) I used a 1/4" drill bit to drill the tubes out. Easy so far. I am thinking of leaving the coating on under the handles for protection. But with them off it will be easier to work with.

Wish me luck.

After about 40 min using a piece of a left over 40 grit belt. Getting rid of the dimples is tuff stiff. I am going to stop here until tomorrow when I can get some of the good stuff to sand with.

Do you have a pic of your sand paper/glass set up?

Ok....

Here is the piece of glass...

It's 10mm (0.39") thick...

And it has rubber feet to stop it sliding around..

I think it was called a "tea light candle holder" in the shop where I found it...but any bit of toughened glass would do.

I use these plastic clamps because they are quick and easy to use...

Clamp your length of sandpaper to your finest table with the piece of glass under the paper...

Now you can sand totally flat.... (shown using a blade I destroyed last year)

This will also show that your FFBM is probably not totally flat... there will be high points and low points.... getting the whole blade perfectly flat requires a certain amount of effort and a high degree of stubborness.

You can also move the glass to the edge of the paper to sand the sabre or flat grinds and keep the plunge cuts crisp...

Hope that helps....

Cheers.

+1. Could you also include word counts (just the numbers, not quotations) on cursing?

Good luck, Tyrkon...I think you might need it! Great project! And a thanks to Soup Monger for showing the glass plate setup. I, too, am curious how much cursing and how many bandaids will be required for this!

Awesome! Thanks for the pics. This could make things easier as I try to sort out my next hack-project. (Project for some of you guys - mine usually look like hack jobs!) I like the glass.
