I just learned today that my God son earned his knife badge in the Boy Scouts. I am not sure what the badge is, but I really want to get him a nice quality first pocket knife. I was thinking maybe a SAK Farmer. What would you all suggest?

SAK Farmer is a great idea for a scout.

The Swiss Army Knife is an excellent idea. Plus, if you're interested, Victorinox makes several Official BSA knives under contract. Same knives as the normal SAKs, but with the BSA logo.

I'd get him a Buck 112 AND a VINTAGE Camillus Boy Scout knife off of EBAY
Or an Ulster scout knife
Or something like this Imperial===>

Then tell him about the town it was made in
The workers that made it

The factory

The years it was most likely made
The type of steel
The handle material
The pins
The type of nail nick.....

Get him an old school whetstone too
Like the kind that come in the Camillus "pilots" knives or those cheap 1982'ish Rambo type survival knives :eek:
None of that Lansky sharpener stuff or the ceramic rods sets at the PRECISE angle gibberish
Bring it back old school===>
Just a whetstone and a big glob of spit!!!
Like Granpappy used to do sittin' on the porch whittlin' a sling shot......:cool:

When he gets his HATCHET badge===>
Hook him up with a Bridegport one ;)
(is there a hatchet badge? If not, they need one:grumpy:..IMHO)

You may want to check with his local Boy Scout council, but some Boy Scout events don't allow fixed blades.

I just ordered my godson a Victorinox Hiker the other day. He's in the Cub Scouts, and I've put off giving him a knife long enough.

Vic Farmer or one of the official BS knives from them. You may want to check with the troop leader. I would lean towards the Farmer as the Alox knives are stouter and should last a lifetime. I have a dozen or so SAK and my Alox is my favorite. It is a Pioneer Rancher. Though for camping, e.g. BSA stuff the Soldier or Farmer would be better.

We couldnt have fixed blades, and all blades had to be 4 inches or less. No daggers, no switchblades. (Obviously)

A lot of kids had SAKs, and a lot had cheap ass SAK clones....poor kids.

Many had Leatherman or Gerber Multitools, a few had Gerber Gators.....(Oooooh :D)

I always had a Gerber Multitool, and a locking blade Victorinox SAK, with the fleur de lis on the scale. I got that SAK from selling popcorn. (Still have it too...Adventurer?)

The REALLY nice knives at camp were Kershaws I believe.

I would go for the SAK. I loved my Adventurer. Any would be a good choice.

Yet another vote for an Alox Farmer. Believe me, he'd likely rather have the extra gadget factor of more tools than just a folding knife.

The "Be Prepared" idea seems to go hand in hand with a multi-tool. My vote would be a Leatherman Wave. If you don't want to go the mult-tool route and want to get him a folder I would go with a Spyderco Delica.

man Scouts sure has changed since i was a kid....we used to carry our rifles , fixed blades, folders with us and we spent a LOT of time in the woods, even in the bitter cold of winter.

I just checked out the local troop here (for a friends kid) and its pretty sad what its become. (your regions might be different, i dont know?)

Oh, yeah.
I specifically wanted the saw, which is why I had to order that Hiker.
Figured he'd spend more time playing with that, and cut himself less than with the blades!
The 3-4 places I looked around here had Tinkers, Super Tinkers, Recruits, and some larger models, but nothing in a 3 layer with a saw. Lots of stuff out of stock from Christmas. Thought about the Farmer, but wanted him to have the tweezers. I've pulled splinters out of him a few times with the one in the Classic on my keys.
