Hi All,

I received a few Buck Knives (6) as part of an inheritance of a large ? knife collection (~ 200 knives).

I am trying to date them figure out the model names, metal type etc.

Knife 1: Buck 112. From the stickies here on the forum I have dated it to 1972. It is stamped Buck, 112, USA. I think it is a version 1. Guess I don't need help on that one, maybe just confirmation

Knife 2: Buck 501 Stamped: "Script Buck" 501 USA No dots or other markings. I think it is pre-1985. It has 2 stainless inlay rivets and 1 stainless spring rivet. The spring rivet is larger than the inlay rivets. Anyway of figuring out actual date?

Knife 3: Kalinga : stamped Buck Kalinga USA. No date marks. Pre-1986. Not sure on model number. Anyway of figuring out date?

I am planning on keeping the 501, 112, and the Kalinga. I am not sure if I will keep the 124, 121 or the unmarked ones (probably will keep the 124). All of the knives are used and need some work done on them. I believe that a knife should be used and safe, so I want to make sure all of them are sharp and clean, so they will be going to Buck for a spa treatment.

Thanks in advance for the information. The ones I keep will be passed down to my kids in the future. If I keep 4 then that will mean 2 for each son (looks like I'll keep the 124).

At a glance.......starting with the first...... I'd say the 112 blade has been tipped and reground. Should be three inches. The bolsters have been rounded off, too. Nice old knife, but not at all original.

The 119 tip also looks odd. Should be six inches. Another nice old one. Late 60s or early 70s depending on the spacer material.

Don't know enough about 501s to even comment.

Nice old Kalinga!!

Nice 121 (72 maybe) and even better 124 (don't know the age off-hand).

You got yourself a fine inheritance!

Thanks for the information. So the knife that did not have a model number is the 119. The blade length is 5 7/8". The tip does look like it was redone. The 112 is 2 3/4" long and looks a bit short when folded up. Do you think that Buck will still clean up the knives even though they have been reground?

Yes, I think so.

They do a polish and sharpen for $6 per Buck knife.

It's good to call them before shipping. Website link at the top of main page with contact info.

Modifications can void warranty work, but shouldn't make a difference on the spa treatment.

Somebody will be along and tell you a little more about the knives, I'm sure. I only hit on what I know off hand and what looked obvious to me. There are far more savvy people here, it just takes them a while to get their coffee.

:)

Some time photos are revealing and decieving. The 119 to me is 69-71. THE 112 is not first version it is 4th, 1973. The 401 Kalinga is 72-80. I could get closer with the box. Your 121 is 73-80. Your 501 Esquire is 1975-early 77. Your knives are all of the nice old stuff. But the rarest or harder to find (though not the oldest)is your 501. Buck brought the model out in Feb. of 75 w/ an exposed rocker pin and sometime in 77 began to hide it. This model was a real dressy/classy looking model for Buck at the time, 440C blade and stainless frame all polished. DM

After a 2nd look at your 401 and 124 they are both 1982-85 as they have birch wood handles. DM
