tell if my canteen cup is stainless or alluminum

The cup is SS .Any metallurgist like myself can easily tell just by looking!

Scrub it very lightly with scotchbrite
If the slurry is black/grey it is Al

SS is harder and you will get a slurry if you scrub hard

Definitely stainless, us welders can tell from looking at it too! You are gtg.

thanks so much guys. im really anal about stuff like this and this thread helped me get sleep lol.

Looks like stainless to me. Also, when testing with a magnet, you need a rare earth magnet when dealing with 300 series stainless. It will barely be attracted (a weaker magnet will not show noticeable attraction).

The canteens marked 88 PAC fab are all SS in my experience. Also the SS canteens will attract a strong magnet like a rare earth magnet but not a refrigerator magnet. Good luck

Thanks for chiming in ... I'm sure the OP was wondering why there hadn't been any activity in this thread for the past 2 and a half years

Dang, I was looking forward to the photos after the OP put a magnet up to the cup, scratched it, hit it with a hammer, blowtorched it and then put in on the grinder.
