No. King water stones (at least the traditional ones) can be permanently kept soaked or 'permasoaked'.
This channel uses mixture of tsp and baking soda.
If you are using guided sharpening, this technique may work well. Try it on less expensive knives first though.

I think major point with SiC sandpaper is that glass/granite is not abraded and dished and hence the stone could be properly flattened.
