Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

If you are interested in the different techniques and hammers used for straigtening M Carters video on YT is pretty informative. I am checking some Hss saws on local classifieds and also noticed the marks. Do you just cut and a grind the knives or do a new HT? Is additional tempering necessary...

    Enco NR Hardness tester help

The pic on the unit from ebay shows it using a 50-40-60 (standard 150 kg) stack for hrc test. The indenter doesn't look right to me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/303695950011

    Enco NR Hardness tester help

It looks like the unit from ebay? I was just wondering when I saw that unit where the weights are.. Maybe you could write the company that bought them to see if they still have some spares around? Getting those parts custom done might not be worth it. You should also consider returning the...

I hope you don't have to carry it down the stairs then :) I am sure Stacy will have some ideas, but it shouldn't be impossible. Maybe you could ask around locally, car repair shops or similar if they know someone who has the right equipment to move it?

Every time I see a fireplace now, I think to myself if it would be hot enough for heatreating, I heat-treated my first blade at the fireplace in my parents house. 😁

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

Is that a pic after straightening? The rest of the warp you ground out? Yeah, those divots look much less stress inducing then the ones I did with the drill bit.

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

I straightened at full thickness. First I tapped lightly with a soft backing. Then I switched to metal backing and stronger taps and thing started to straighten out. I am quite sure that the crack was not there before grinding. Or at least it was not that big and it expanded after the internal...

Paid heat treatment in the EU

Schanz is the best priced one as far as I know. As suggested, browse the site and order other stuff if needed to save on shipping. If I remember right he has good priced kydex and micarta.

    Old bandsaw repair options?

That looks nice, it's a metal cutting saw, no? What speeds does it run (I see there is a selector, but can't read it), do you cut wood with it as well? I have a Emco BS3, it runs 2120mm bandsaw and a has a pulley system for different cutting speeds and the disc sander. I am thinking if it's...

    Old bandsaw repair options?

My bandsaw has seen better days as well, I think it needs new tires, new belt and new bearings. Maybe a stronger motor as well. @Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith, how powerful should the motor be for cutting steel? My 750w seems to struggle on stainless steel above 4 mm?

Looks similar to sapele mahogany that I bought for bow risers.

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

Thats a good idea. I will cut if off first and then snap it. I tested the other blade from the batch that took less curve on couple of places where I could grind to reasonable parallel surfaces. I used a new 120 belt, and tested at least 15 times. The hardness tester I posted in my other...

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

It's not that I take everything that I read here for granted. I am stubborn as well and have done a lot against the advice that was given here. Sometimes successful, sometimes not. I do a lot of research on everything beforehand and based on that I give it a try with the equipment I have. Again...

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

I consider myself a beginner, so I tend to try out things that others have reported to work well. Also cheap steel makes cheap mistakes. Expensive steel makes expensive mistakes. 420hc and 14c28n are readily available in good dimensions and thicknesses for kitchen knives. It was my first...

Cracked blade from peening - 14C28N?

Yeah, that's a good point. I was wondering about that, since M Carter shows a straight edge hammer (contrary of rounded edges that most use here). Still a big old crack like that was not expected. You can see that I ground most of the main bevel before it decided to crack like that. I am...
