Good luck. I've found that just about every setup, and most solutions are just different enough to require a good amount of trial and error to fine tune things. Let alone differences in material to be anodized. Sounds like you're on the right track.
Your results look to be very much what I would have expected. Bead blasting would have taken a layer off, but obviously wasn't consistent. If you are going for that deep blue color, have you tried going back to a low voltage blue? Going from memory, but maybe 18-20v. With some experiments...
