Fire Making Igniting a Core 4 Ti stove using a Sock and Can.

Thanks brother. I bet you have some real nice wood in Australia for bow drill!

Fire Making Igniting a Core 4 Ti stove using a Sock and Can.

Not done yet. A big crazy thick 1095 striker knife from Wolf Creek Forge, flint, chaga and the can! The mass of the knife means it doesn't move much when stuck and hits hard as it strikes. Differential heat treatment with a hard spine and tempered blade. It's the best of both worlds...

Fire Making Igniting a Core 4 Ti stove using a Sock and Can.

Decided to mess around more with the old can which was rescued this time from the recycle bin. After this I am going to duct tape the sides and add it to my firecraft stuff. Wonder how long it will last? Mullein on mullein using a can and sock. Original BHK Tiger knapp in O1. I have...

Fire Making Igniting a Core 4 Ti stove using a Sock and Can.

Smoke rising from inside the drilled hole shows the coal. Once chaga takes a coal it's very difficult to extinguish. I was unable to do so by cutting the coal out then dumping the smoldering fungus into the tinder bundle. Even invisible micro sparks will reignite the material. So the rule...

Fire Making Igniting a Core 4 Ti stove using a Sock and Can.

Some weeks ago I was in these woods doing some muti fuel stove tests during rainy weather and noticed this can. Normally I would have picked it up but decided to leave it for something special. When I went back out some days later the can was still there. One pro to trash is often it doesn't go...

    Striker PSK knife testing fun!

And the Kydex is done! O1 striker PSK compared to SS PSK. I used the same adjustable knife lock as the SS PSK sheath. It's doesn't need this for retention but I really don't like the concept of even the possibility of the lose of a PSK as survival is it's middle name. SS PSK...

Minimalist camping without a fixed blade

Less gear I have the more I need a knife. Aw heck when I got my full kit the fixed blade gets less action.

Skunk Ape Water Moccasin Big Cypress Hike.

This is my second attempt in as many years to sniff out the Skunk ape. In fact I had an entire wish list including the following: 1. Skunk Ape. Not likely. 2. Florida Panther. Maybe but cats are so elusive. 3. Eastern Diamond back rattler. Maybe. 4. Black bear. Maybe. 5. Coral snake. Not...

    Striker PSK knife testing fun!

1/8 O1 tool steel deferentially heat treated to be both a striker and working knife. Testing using charcloth and chert. Local chaga and English flint.

Stainless Steel Knife Firecraft Myths. Field Tested!

Seems that way. LOL! I made this loop of orange Kydex. Added shock cord later after comparing the contrast in colors. Shock cord does help. Another DIY loop though still a human hand will eventually remove a firesteel for use. Then the cat is out of the bag!

Stainless Steel Knife Firecraft Myths. Field Tested!

Heck doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out the ferro rod is disappearing, not the knife. With flint and steel it's the knife getting scraped up though dang, you should see some of the rock chips fly at times. LOL. I am not sure what the primary anti spark problem with SS knives are. D2 is...

Stainless Steel Knife Firecraft Myths. Field Tested!

Heat treatment has much to do with it IMHO. Dead hard seems best. Hence why dedicated strikers often work better than knives (however I do have striker knives) but many carbon steel implements certainly work. An old USA file works great! I had good luck with 1095, W1, O1, the tool steels. Other...

Stainless Steel Knife Firecraft Myths. Field Tested!

Maybe ask several people who were on Alone that question. They seemed to lose their ferro rods. When it comes to da woods entropy rules so more options are never a bad thing. Overall for me like friction fire flint and steel methodology is fun. I like fun stuff. I do take ferro rod loss...

    The Garberg arrived today

I have a hard time spending too much coin on a Mora knife. Not that the more expensive ones aren't worth it but....well..... In any case I look forward to your longer terms impressions.
