So i was putting my zt 0200 back together after taking it apart to do some cleaning. When putting it back together i noticed that one of my standoffs* was a different width than the other 2 so i measured it and I was right. I am going to try and post a picture that shows the difference.

The widths of the standoffs are
0.185 in
0.206 in
0.208 in

As yall can see one is over.02 thinner.
the .002 difference I can contribute to machining tolerances and DLC coating but .02 is roughly 10% of the total width.

So... My question for all of you wise knife folk out there, is this correct or was it a mistake? if it is correct why was it made this way and of the three positions where does the skinny standoff go?

*i think standoff is the correct term for it but if not im talking about the spacer between the liners that the screws screw into.

That is weird, maybe they grabbed one from a thinner knife and just slapped it in there, or it got by quality control.

I would put the thinner one in the middle of the thickest one toward the pivot, but thats just me. I don't think you even need all three, I think 2 will get the job done fine, so the middle thinner on witll be more of a place holder.

I think you can get a new set from ZT, check the website, they have an order form.

Yeah i put it all back together and put it the farthest from the pivot but didnt tighten it very much. im considering just taking it out and going without.

but if it is wrong them im going to call ZT tomorrow and talk to them, knowing their reputation for customer service im sure they will help me get it straightened out.

They'll send you a baggy of new standoffs for free - just contact them with your mailing address and they'll get that out to you fast. The bad one doesn't look like it came from another knife, it looks like a lemon to me because the blur standoffs are the other ones of that similar variety and they're much smaller and don't have the matte finish.

yeah i figured they would,i just wanted to make sure something was wrong first

My question to you: Was there an issue with the knife before? If not, you should put it back the way it was. I don't know of Production companies going to the extra effort of using different sized stand-offs, but, I have owned customs that did. One particular Mayo I had, had some lock up issues. I sent it back to Tom for a once over and it was determined that the standoffs had been put back in the wrong order during re-assembly by a previous owner. He flipped them back there they needed to be and it was back to perfect.

If you aren't experiencing any issues with blade centering or lock up.... don't monkey with it. Sometimes they are perfect just the way they are. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the handle was designed with a slight taper to it, and the different sizes are to accommodate that feature. (I've heard some custom makers prefer tapering their handles). If it's a Kershaw product, I doubt the differences in size are in any way unintentional.

the blade was never centered correctly and i tried a couple things to fix it but gave up cause it never bothered me because the blade didnt rub the liner. But now that i know it could be an easy fix i want to try and fix it.

no you can clearly see that the first standoff isnt machined properly. If you look the left side is thinner than the right. The crevice machined in the center looks off center do to this error. I would say that particular stand off was manufactured wrong and was missed. I dont know of any kershaw knife that uses a spacer that is offset like that.

so I will be calling ZT tomorrow and inquiring about a new stand off

but in the mean time,
when i had put the knife back together (before i posted this thread) i put the shorter standoff farthest from the pivot which resulted in picture 1 where the blade is in the same position it has been its whole life (off center but not rubbing)

well after reading all yalls wonderful knowledge i removed the standoff from the knife all together and put the knife back together with ony the two remaining standoffs. one in the hole closest to the pivot and one in the hole farthest from the pivot resulting in a blade centering shown in picture 2. its still not perfect but i think its alot better.

The second picture looks like you can tighten the pivot a little more to get it centered better.

If you put the thinner one in the middle it should just hang out there. In the meantime you should order another set of standoffs from ZT.

another trick to try is to loosen the handle screws and pivot and tighten everything back down while manually holding the blade centered. It will help center the blade. If it doesnt work hold the blade to the opposite side of where it wants to go. To me it looks like it wants to go to the right so hold it to the left of center if the first way doesnt work.

when i put it back together i loosened everything then tightened the pivot pretty tight the thighted the standoff screws then back the pivot off till it was where i like it.

also i called zt and they are sending some standoffs to me should be here next week.
