Thats a great looking knife,is that natural micarta.

Richard

Thanks for your reply, I'm assuming it is natural Micarta, I picked it up whilst I was doing a job in a factory a couple of years ago. I spotted it in the stores and asked the storeman where he got it. He then very kindly gave me;) two slabs measuring 24" x 6" x 1"!!
I'm just grateful to have it. Trying to find a good selection of micarta in England is like trying to find rocking horse s**t!
Cheers, Ian

Bailey,

That is fine work, very advanced. I have one suggestion, don't leave that flat area on the handle, slim it enough so you can contour the entire handle.

very nice
what type of steel did you use?
edward

All my knives are made from circular saw blades (L6 or European equivalent).
Most people then lose interest!
I've found it to be an excellent steel, and once I've done some experimentation with a few pieces to get the heat treat correct it performs very well. This particular blade is a fraction under 7/32" thick after the initial grinding away of the pits. I work with only two batches of different blades at a time (one 1/8" & one 7/32") so the heat treat is established already, to make things simple. This blade and most of what I make except small blades are edge quenched in oil and tempered twice at 450f for 3/4 hour.
Sorry for rambling on! hope this answers your question ok.
Thanks for replying,
Ian

I think you did a really nice job on this piece - I quite like the lines.

Thank you very much for your reply. I know exactly what you mean about the flats on the handle. I usually shape my handles like this

Due to only having 1" thickness of material to work with, it was not really feasible to do much shaping.:(
Thank you for your reply, I'm amazed someone such as yourself has complimented my work.
Thanks,you've just made my day:D
