I've been looking at some design differences in the 110 5th Version Variation 3 and *110* (5th Version Variation 7 in the new data sheet or 6th Version Variation 2 in an older data sheet). Maybe someone with more knowledge about mechanics can answer some questions. Take a look at the pictures. (There's nothing like a close-up and lights to show scratches and dirt.)
First, notice that for the 5th Version, the blade tang sticks out when the knife is closed; the tang is more or less flush for the *110*. Also, the blade rivet (the pivot point) for the 5th Version is slightly off center side to side, about 5/16" from the blade side and about 3/8" from the rocker side; the blade rivet for the *110* is pretty much centered. When the knives are open, you can see a real difference in the shape of the tang. On the back-side, notice that on the 5th Version the rocker reaches almost to the front of the bolster and on the *110* it is set back. The front bolster is about 1/16" wider on the *110*.
My guess is that the changes were made to have more tang material in the bolster, which would increase resistance to side-to-side movement of the blade. Also, with the rocker further back, it might make the locking mechanism stronger. I think the *110* had another change: a blade bushing was added. Does anyone have a comment about these changes?
Finally, there is a question I shouldn't ask since I am a new kid on the block. (I hope it doesn't get me banned from the forum for life.) Why was the *110* changed from a 6th Version to a 5th Version in the new data sheet? The first 5 Versions are based on differences in spacer design and material, and the *110* has a steel spacer like the 5th Version, but it seems to me that other major design changes should make the *110* a 6th Version.
