Merry Christmas everyone:D

Now for a knife question. I am switching to a Rob Frink grinder and debating which contact wheel to get. I am really into flat grinds now and wonder if a 14" wheel is a good compromise for removing blade weight and having a grind that cuts as well???
I like using 3/16 and 1/4" stock.

Opinions!

Robert, Hello. I switched to a 14" hollow grind with the same thing in mind. I really like the results. I like the looks of a wide hollow grind but think the flat grind cuts well. This is a good combination of both. I hardly ever do a flat grind anymore unless someone requests it.

Hello Robert,

I have a few comments:

Even though it boils down to personal preference, The 14" wheels have a unique feel to them when you grind. It is hard to explain but I think it is the fact that they turn so much slower than say an 8" wheel....that you have the perception that you are grinding in slow motion with precision and grace. I personally hate flat grinding due to the thumping, belt wear, grit flying around...etc. The 14" wheel offers an alternative.

...and here's the sales pitch.... Out of all of the KMG grinder packages, the 14" package is the best value. You get the most tooling for the $. On the other hand, you can always get more tooling later as you grow into the machine. If you are ever in the Columbus, Ohio area, feel free to stop by and try everything out. Heck, today we are looking at an 8 degree windchill with snow flurries, in case you are tired of warmth and sunshine....(hee hee).

Just some food for thought.

Take care,
Rob

Thanks Rob,
I will be glad to stop by and see you in the Summer when it's 115deg here and still 95deg at 10:00 pm at night!!!
Of course the flip side to that is today the high is in the 60s low in the 40s:p

I really am looking forward to getting one of your grinders. Just need so sell a few more blades.
By the way anybody need a Bowie (Check out the Exchange) so I can get one of Robs Machines?
Yes a shameless plug please don't Ban me:eek:

That is absolutely true. I got my 14" wheel yesterday from Rob and spent all day playing with it. (I prefer doing hollow grinds to flat grinding.) I ruined my first two blanks beyond repair with it. The second ruined blade created near maniacal rage in me. What a hoot. It is like learning to grind all over again. Finally I got one to come out and love the huge hollow grind look to it. I am determined to make it work so I will concentrate on the 14" wheel until I master it. Rob mentions the feel of the wheel. Again, true enough. I hit some small bumps in the grind and came to a dead stop to look at the blade since the bumps had such a large feel to them I had to see what was going on.
I am really going to like this wheel for its challenge and what it can do.
