ok, here was my first experiment....

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4196514&l=028c73cde0&id=670198055

a hacked tandy kit, some olive oil (as suggested) and a torx screwdriver for the star stamps :) I learned a lot, have some tools on the way (from Jantz) and cant wait to "get it right" next time around!

One question about the order of things: If I'm going to od some seriouse stamping (say basketweve) can I do it BEFORE I wet mold? or will the water relax the pattern? If you do it after the wetmold, any tips on how to get something solid under the leather (now folded and molded) to be stamped?

Thanks for all the great advice I've been getting here!

PS next project is my IZULA!

just keep the knife that the sheath was molded around in inside for a solid backing to stamp on.....eh?

Much better to do the stamping on the flat leather, you get more accurate stamping and a cleaner look. You will lose some definition, but its negligible. If you keep the stamped area on the top of the form and not spill it over the sides you will not have to worry so much about it getting bunged up.

With your first sheath - I don't see how that will stay on the blade. You need a retention strap - or a wet mold over the handle.

Hey TF - Its wet molded (slightly) over the blade so it stays on in my pocket and doesn't fall off. Clearly it won't work as a belt or neck sheath but this one was joust for pocket fun and to get my first feel for working leather. For the upcoming IZULA sheath I was thinking a wet mold over the handle as you suggest.
