Well, i like to jump in with both feet. Took the virgin BK16 FFG outside today. I immediately went to batoning with it. This is the same piece of super hard Black Walnut, that has a nasty twist in it. I figured that would be a good test. Words alone do not describe how hard i had to pound this thing to get through it. The knife was a little short for this big hunk of wood, so i had to pound the pommel many different times to get the handle back up against the wood, so i had a little of the knife tip sticking out, to finish batoning it all the way through. Makes you REALLY appreciate the extended tang/pommel. Enjoy.

This is where the tip disappeared.

Resulting in me having to baton the extended tang/pommel.

Many times, to get the handle back up against the wood, so i could baton the tip again.

A little whittling. MAN, this is hard wood ! (minds out of the gutter please, LOL)

Decided to drill a hole, the edge held up nicely.

When all was said & done, the garden gnome approved !

It did not shave hair afterwards. But just ONE SWIPE on each side of the butchers steel had it shaving paper again. I realized i probably bit off a little more than i should have, doing this with that little knife, but i test things hard, so that i know absolutely that it can hang tough when needed. The blade did not deflect at all when going through the twist in the wood. It stayed nice & straight. The coating stayed on pretty well. Another job well done by the master of Becker Knife & Tool.

I was wondering how grippy that coating was while batonning.

I blame the wood, not the coating. That crap was hard as a rock, plus the wicked twist in it didn't help any.

I understand, but I wouldn't think that would go through wood better than a stripped blade. And I'm sure it's grippier than the old coating.

Looking good TS! I cant wait for this semester to be end so I can get back outside.

Is the FFG version more difficult to find? I can't seem to find a place that sells them. Most show the saber grind model. Also, do they have different model numbers or anything like that? I don't want to order if the knife pictured is a stock photo of the FFG but they end up sending the saber grind.

As far as i know, only one place was selling the sabre grind First Production Run BK16. Smoke. Mountains. Knives. Works. There is the FPR (first production run) & then the FFG (full flat grind) versions. Tomars Ka-Bars has the FFG version.

Where in NY ???

I have a BK15 that just arrived and I did have plans to strip it right away. Now I'm inclined to leave it on for a while to see how it performs. Sure seemed to hold up well with hard wood batoning.

Thanks TwinStick.

I'm actually no longer in NY. Moved to northern Virginia in November. Before that I spent near 30 years in Manhattan.

Hi TwinStick,

We exchanged emails and your thread inspired me to pull the trigger on the BK16 and Mashed Cat kydex.

Thank you sir for the great photos, testing, and informative emails!

Sorry if this is a little late to answer your question but almost every site sells the FFG version of the knife. The only ones who don't, sell the signature version first production run with the saber grind and it will tell you in the description what grind the knife has. Many sites just have the picture of the saber grind model because that is the first picture released of the knife and they had it up for pre order or to say that they will soon be getting the knife and they never cared to change it.

Also want to add that some websites simply have not updated the photo of the knife to reflect the FFG.
