2 ?'s Indexing and "Smith'n Magician"

I've been trying to make an indexing head for marking to cut spiral grooves in knife
handles. I can't seem to get as even as I want the grooves. Is there some way to make
the marks more even?

I've been asked to write on the "smith'n magician" or guillotine fuller. I had
several links to drawings but can't find any of them now. The link below doesn't seem
to work. Anyone got a link that will have drawings?

I use a round plate attached to the rod holding the handle. The plate was maked using a protactor. I drilled a piece of wood to hold the pencel and trimed the wood to be on center. Once the handle is marked with the pencel I use a thin back saw made by dremel to cut the pencel lines.

The old timers had a trick to do this on homemade wood Taps. They would cut a strip of paper the pitch they wanted and wrap it around the work piece, edge to edge. They would scribe the paper edges.
