Nice pair of knives! Good analysis of the slight differences between two of the same model. Your guess on the prototype may be right; although there have been 20" M43's before I think, but this is the first with 3 pins instead of 2.

IIRC, this was the Duck's blade of choice---you couldn't get one fast enough when he was a'sharking (a'ducking?)
 
I have avoided them because of the lack of the grip ring... The ring seems to make all the difference in the world to my hands... It just seems to 'lock' the grip in my hand and keep it from sliding around...
