In an effort to better equip myself without spending a ton of cash, I found myself brainstorming in the car. A trip to the hardware store yielded collins axes with decent heads but VERY crappy hanldes. Those with good grain already had cracks. I'm not going to drop 20 bucks on an axe that will break. I was thinking that Cold Steel sells longer hafts for their hawks, and when I popped online they have a 30inch haft for 12 bucks or so. Anyone done this? I know Vec makes longer handles in composite, how does the Rifleman work with a longer handle? It is the heaviest of my hawks, and thus would benefit the most I think from a longer handle.

I put a 31.5" handle on my CS Plainsman hawk. The plainsman is the same as the rifleman but without the hammer poll. I like the extra handle length Lot

Here are some Pics.

if i can learn to save some money my plainsman hawk is going to Vec for a good handle. i'm thinking 20-24" will suit me just fine. the rifleman being heavier yet will probably work pretty good with a longer handle yet.

cold steel put out a battle ax when the war hammer came out but i've yet to see anyone do any mods on one or let alone see one on here. should make a pretty good ax i would think.

I guess its one of those life lessons - before looking elsewhere for the solution, look to yourself!
