Saturday I stopped by The Sportsman‘s Warehouse (the big national chain) here in Mesa looking for a inexpensive deer rifle for my 14 year old son. I looked at a few different rifles before noticing a stainless steel Weatherby Vanguard. Retail price on this particular Vanguard is $729. The sale price was $459 which I thought was a darn good price. The salesman then informed me they were offering a $150 store credit for purchases over $500. The store credit cannot be used until June 15th however. I added one box of FEDERAL 180GR Nosler Accubond. Now for the really amazing thing. Each Vanguard is shipped with a factory shot target. The photo shows the target that came with this rifle. Three shots through 1 ragged hole. Unbelievable! This thing shoots as good, if not better than ANY factory rifle I own! For a grand total of $350 before taxes. I think this deal is still going on for those looking for such a rifle for their son or daughter. Heck, he may never get the thing out of my hands. By the way, those are ½ inch squares on the target.

Damn. No Sportsman‘s Warehouse locations in my state. :grumpy:

I've always lusted after a Weatherby but thought they were just too expensive to justify the cost. The new Vanguard line had me rethinking the idea of actually buying one, and a deal like that would definetly push me to "pull the trigger" on a new rifle. :o

Just take the short drive up the road to Chattanooga, we've got one. Do it on the weekend and make a nice little trip out of it. :D

Great deal:thumbup: BUT that is a HE__ of a lota gun for a 14 yr old:eek::confused::p.
My brother has 2 Winchester Model 70 Classics in .300 WSM and loves them. According to him, they don't kick badly, BUT in his opinion and everyone elses' who has to sit next to him at the firing line at the range, for some reason, the .300 WSM may be the LOUDEST .30 caliber round in existence!!!!! Buy some good hearing protection for the lad.

Hmmm... Chattanooga? What caliber?

Ideally, if I get a Weatherby gun I'd love to get it in one of the Weatherby Magnum calibers. I know that ammo for one of the standard magnum or non-magnum calibers would be both cheaper and easier to find, but there is just something about those smoking hot Weatherby Magnums that appeals to me. :D

You want me to stop by and see if they have any Weatherby's there and how they are chambered? It might be Thursday or Friday before I could let you know something.

Please don't go out of your way, but if you plan on stopping by anyway and want to take a look, I would appreciate it! ;)

Thats a great price, for a great shooter. I've yet to read or hear anything bad about them.
The only problem I've ever had with Weatherbys was a S/S 338 win mag I had a few years back. The mounting holes were drilled so far out of line I couldn't even get a scope mounted on it.

My son just went through hunters education and one of their rifles that was confiscated from a poacher was a 30-378 Weatherby.. SWEET

As far as it being to much rifle for your son, everyone and every rifle is different. If he is afraid of it after he shoots it, get it away from him and buy him something smaller that he can enjoy.
