This one is the 3rd one completed on the Artisan machine. I made this last weekend for a personal knife that I recently bought off of Bill Buxton.

You may notice a little of Paul Long's influence here.:o:D
He has been a tremendous help in my sheath making and in advice on the Toro3000. His work is so iconic that in some ways I couldn't help but drift towards his style in trying to do something fancier.

I hope he doesn't mind. ;)

Very, very nice, Stuart. The machine makes quite a bit of difference not only in time saved, but in consistency of stitch.

You are off and running now my friend. it just gets better and better from here.

Paul

Edited to add. I am honored, and humbled that my work has influenced your style.

Sheath looks awesome Stuart. I saw you post that knife on gunnutz and boy, it's a beauty! That sheath is a worthy match in my very humble opinion.

That's real nice! Your work is inspiring Stuart. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on that same machine, very close.

Thanks everyone. A special one to you Paul. Thanks for answering all my questions. I have a couple more but I will wait a bit.. :p

There certainly is a learning curve to a machine. The inter-relation of welts, presser foot pressure and stitch length is a finesse in many cases. You can see where the machine didn't "walk" as far between some stitches as it tried to ride up the welt.
Also, things like belt loops and such are a new design problem I am sorting out. There certainly is the need to design for the machine. In some ways I find that a little limiting but the trade off for the ease and the speed of machine sewing is worth it.
As I can only do work in the evenings after the wife and kids are asleep, I only have a few hours to work. Hand stitching a sheath like this requires at least 3 hours with all the extra glueing of the deerskin, the two lines of sewing at the mouth and then laying out the holes for the main body...
Sometimes it was so daunting I would space the stitching out over 2 evenings just to allay the tedium. Well, I basically did this sheath in one sitting. (minus the dye work and waiting for the leather to case)

Get the machine Eli if you can... it's a dream..:D

WOW Stuart, that looks awesome, if it wasn't for the worries of customs I'd put you to work. ;)

Bill

Thanks Bill. It's a beautiful knife. I'll be getting another from you when I can afford it.
Too bad about customs, it would be a blast working with you.
