3V Sharpening Question

I picked up a Spyderco Sharpmaker today because I have zero freehand sharpening skill (Now everything in my house shaves hair and my scissors can push-cut a phone book!). I currently have a bushmaster on order in 3V and I was wondering if that steel would be too much for the Sharpmaker to handle? Also, a couple more questions for Dan, what angle is the bevel on the bushmaster? Will I be able to use a sharpmaker on it?

Thanks!

The sharpmaker would work great on the BushMaster...!

As long as you have diamond hones...it will sharpen 3V, no problem. The hones that come standard with it are not diamond hones...you will need to order them from spyderco.

Those diamond stones are expensive!!! Is it too late to swap mine back to O1? :foot: I am currently number 32 on the list.

If the Bushcraft is not completely dull you could do the right job on the sharpmaker. It's a skandi, so the better way is to use the sticks on the reverse side of the sharpmaker. It will be not so difficult, trust me
If the edge is dull, better if you look around for a Fallkniven DC4 or a little DMT.
:D

+1:thumbup:Those Diamond tri-stones can handle anything.They're worth the $$.

The ceramic rods are harder than the steel, and will sharpen. They don't cut super fast on hard steel, though, so if you need to reprofile or bring back a seriously dull edge, then diamonds would be the way to go.

Yes to all of the above....just about any stone will do the job...but diamonds are quickest/easiest.

Personally, I would use a DMT diamond hone. Readily available for ~$25-30 and good for any knife steel.

Dan

p.s. if you want to change to O1, no problem. Just post the change in that thread.

He is talking about the Bushmaster right? Not the Bushcraft?

This is not a scandi but a mini bevel. It will be slower - but he can use the Spyderco kit he has.

correct - like I said, any sharpener will be able to sharpen a microbevel on CPM 3V....but diamond will be faster. But, if you have experience sharpening already...you won't really notice much of a difference.

Hello all, my first post!

My question for you:

I've got a GREAT set of Japanese Waterstones, they bring my knifes to an amazing edge, much sharper than anything else I've used, oilstone, diamond, ceramic.

I've got a knife coming to me in the post and its made of CPM 3V. I know its ment to be a great steel, hard and holds a mean edge, but other than taking longer than O1 to sharpen (all my knifes are O1 other than a few Stainless for work around water) is it about as easy to sharpen, I use 800, 1200 and 6000 grit stones, the 6000 is amazing for polishing.

I sharpen my S30V Ritter Grip on my Sharpmaker and it works great. You gotta keep it sharp though, no letting it get really dull or like said above you'll have to get some diamond to put an edge back on.

For me it's hard this way, but I have only big camp knives in 3V. Maybe if your blade is not so thick, you will be able to sharp it with the usual mousepad technique
