I see a lot of 'hawks made from 1095.

What about 5160? Are there any makers that use this steel, or is there no advantage to it on a 'hawk?

Most makers only use 1095 as the bit insert for the cutting edge. This allows them to use a much milder steel for the body of the hawk and still have it take a good edge.

One could probably make the whole hawk out of 5160 with good results, though I don't know of anyone doing so. From my experience with 5160 it should produce a superior hawk.

just about any good steel works for the cutting edge, and a mild steel has benefits for the fold
i know a smith who uses old farrier rasps for edges and wrought iron wagon tires for folds.
all good

what choppers are made out of 1095 besides TOPS FAST AXEs, which are arguably a hybrid, not a hawk (i only know because i have over a hundred FAST AXE 2's on their way here to rehandle).

Cold Steel are made with 1055.

i have forged 5160 and love it for anything that goes SMACK.

I may be mistaken, but I think an all steel (handle and all) tactical hawk or axe was made by one maker. Not RMJ, dang, can't remember the name...
