701 info needed

I just picked up a really nice 701 and so far can't find the info I need on it. Unlike my other's it has the block letter tang stamp and shield, but no date stamp. I had been under the impression that the stamp and shield font were changed in '86 but I guess I misremembered. The knife has only two springs if that helps determining the date it was made.

Does anyone know when the font was changed from the "old English" type?

I checked the old catalogs and they, like me, are no help on this. Hopefully someone else has the answer?

Thanks for the effort Joe. I couldn't find it there either. Rusty sent me a pile of info on the 700 series and I put it someplace that I was sure to remember. Naturally now, I can't find it.:o

Plumber, On the 701 the English script style stamp went to block in 84 while still maintaining only two polished springs thru 85. In 86 Buck gave the 703 and 701 its 3rd spring and began sanding the back springs and bolsters. One can find different stamps used from 84 & 85. ref. pg. 513 in Blades Guide to Knives. DM

Thank you David, I should have known that you would have the info and just called and asked! I don't have the Blades Guide though so I couldn't look it up there. So mine is from somewhere between '83 and '86.

Is mine one that is prone to spring breakage?

The early script stamps were the ones prone to breakage. Not yours.
I just got one and while cleaning it the main blade spring let go.
It's all apart now becoming a 2 blade frankenbuck.

Thank you for the information. I remembered reading where some of the two spring models were prone to breakage but couldn't remember the specifics. It's a relief to know that I can carry and use it without being afraid the springs will break on me.

Yes, it was the first ones from 1979 and only the 703 Colt. Which had the ill fated tempered back springs. For additional reading on this model and series refer to the June 2003 newsletter. A Joe and Larry O. collaboration. Your welcome, David
