710 BM/721 BM question

the 710 is larger as a whole with longer blade. Also has that recurve thing going for it.

has AXIS, G-10, liners, 154CM steel just like 721.

so why is 721 more expensive? it's smaller with shorter blade.

any difference between the two? is the bowie blade less useful?

btw is this recurve on the 710 found on any mini models? such as 814?

Well curious you certainly have come into this with a large amount of enthusiasm, I must say. Which is good. Seem also however to have picked up some curious notions along the way (like confining yourself to a local dealer, steel ideas, PE/CE/SE for self defence, etc). I stress there's no criticism intended in that - it happens.

Anyway your question(s).

I'm not sure, but expect the price difference might have something to do with recoupment of R&D costs, whatever deal BM might have with Mel Pardue, etc - that sort of thing. In no way could it be said that the 720 is a 'better' knife than the 710.

In fact I much prefer the 710. In overall terms, the 710 blade will outperform the Bowie, for one thing (see for example Joe Talmadge's FAQ on Blade Shapes by hitting the link on the top of the page here). I really like the look of the 710, also.

The recurve can't really be accomodated on the smaller blades, so I'm pretty sure the answer is no. There is no recurve on the 705, for example.

thanks for the answer.

i was interested before in using knives but not in their construction, etc Now i'm looking at them in a whole new way...as a potential hobby (an expensive one at that)

steel ideas are from what i've read other ppl say about them and i do not choose to confine myself to one dealer, believe me i've looked around but in Toronto choice is limited. I would prefer being able to walk into a store and have a selection but what reality is for me is one affordable store with only a half dozen offerings from each manufacturer.

only way i can have access to greater selection and better prices is ordering from the US which i will probably do soon. i don't really have any other choice anyways. problem is i won't be able to actually see in person what many knives are like. i wish us Canadians had more enthusiasm for knives like guys south of the border.

The 721 uses much thicker G-10. The 710 esentially has G-10 scales. On the 721 the entire handle is made out of a solid piece of G-10 which is much more expensive to machine because there is extensive milling done for the blade clearence and the liner pocket. All of which has to be done to very close tolerences which is difficult to maintain as G-10 is murder on cutters.

There it is!

Rick
