i ordered tuff cloth and the spyderco sharpmaker. what now?

how often should i disassemble and clean it? oil(militech is on the way)? i saw somebody post about upgrading the washers?

thanks, everyone here has been very helpful on my way to knive obsession.:D

Disassembly voids the BM warrantee. Keep it clean, wipe it down and lube regularly. Let BM's warrantee take care of anything else. It's a good reason to buy another, in case you have to send the first in for service.

You just got the knife, yes? Why don't you use it then clean it when necessary without disassembly. Why do you worry about dissassembly before you have used your knife even?
Enjoy it first! Maintenance will come when it comes.

thanks for the replies, just planning ahead.

with my pistolas i oil once a month, clean after shooting. just trying to get an idea of a maintenance schedule for my edc.

I carry one of three Spydercos A Military, A Civilian or a Chinook. And a SAK Soldier. None of them have ever been apart. You should be able to blow them clean with a little compressed air every once in a while, put a drop of Oil on the pivot and be done with it. IF it get really nasty in there from food...mud...meat...etc. I will just fill the sink with hot soapy water, get a toothbrush and a little Dawn Or Polmolive and scrub everything out. A few more rinses in Hot water and then a few minutes with a blow drier takes care of it. (Make sure the knife gets good and warm from the hot water...helps evaporate any water in hidden crevises when you blow it dry) Then a good light oiling on all the metal. I'm kinda scared of any solvents, metled the handle right off a SAK Tinkerwith Berryman B-12 once while working on the tractor. Hence the Aluminum handled Soldier now...

Bah, taking apart folders is fun, I just wouldnt do it with the 710, the little axis springs are superb for durability, until u try to put em back in the wrong way ;)

Oil it when it stops opening smooth. Clean it when it gets dirty. Disassemble it never, not necessary. Clean with hot soapy water, high-pressure water from the garden hose if necessary, flush with WD-40, disinfect with a weak Clorox solution if you think necessary. I have never had to take one of my Axis locks apart for the purpose of cleaning it.

Good advice Steve.

Also, good choice of words. (I remember something about a blade swap--154CM for HS ?). How's it holding up? Every now and then I'm tempted to follow your lead but come to my senses when I realize that I'm a bozo when it comes to taking apart and reassembling mechanical things. ;)

I'll ditto Steve Harvey. My 710 is in M2 so I take little extra care to keep the uncoated portion of the blade coated with Mineral Oil.

Some good advice above. You might also consider investing in a set of Torx drivers just to keep everything up to snuff.
