Ok..., so -no laughing-!!! I'm going to attempt to post one of the pictures Rick Thatch (Benchmade) sent me of his phenomenal work on the Very Special #8 -----> 49SPL!!

As most of you know.., especially Chuck & Tony, I am Photo-Mega-Pixally-Challenged, and this is my first attempt at posting any picture anywhere. Rick was kind enough to send me several pictures of this knife.., and although I know many have seen it from the presentation done on the Ebay Auction.., I wanted to try one and see if I goof it up. :o

Ok.... arrrrrrrrgh....[Edited cause there is no picture] :(

Anyway..., I really wanted to post this thread just to say what wonderful people Rick & Nina Thatch are. In fact.., you have all seen the knife anyway, and I'll send the pictures to Tony so we can look at them while I'm getting "picturized" educationally. -I don't have the software to reduce the pictures for the Forum-

Most of us have had quite a bit of chit-chat with Benchmade over the years.., and it certainly isn't necessary for me (or anyone) to do a verbal dance about "The Company" itself.

I just wanted to tell everyone on this Forum how great it was dealing with both Rick..(who was the prime-mover behind #8 ~~> and the entire 49 Series, from start to finish).., and his wife Nina.., who was the "Catch of the Century" <~~ congratulations Rick!

Their help and support both informationally.., and just being people.., is something lost and forgotten for the most part these days.., but also very much appreciated by ME!!

I'm sending the pictures to Tony for HELP!!!!..., but I didn't want to wait longer to thank both Rick and Nina! Very hard to find people as genuine, knowledgeable, and helpful in this Galaxy!

By the way ~~> ;) the knife itself is also AWESOME!!

Thanks to Cameron trading with me.., I have #18 & #19 of the 49-01's.., and when my Photo-Phobia is cured I'll post them all together, but this knife is really something..., although getting it will never mean as much as getting to know Rick and Nina...

I was just trying to enter that link you gave me when I saw your post!! I really appreciate you doing that.., and I'll pay you back by not kidding about tang-pins every again. :)

You're off-the-hook for Tony's beer in Oregon Chuck...I'll get his!! That means your kind offer now only has to cover the other Bali-Nuts that come to visit in Eugene. :)

You know what they say Pete, "Improvise, adapt and overcome." ;)

Thanks for letting us see those pictures! Good on you Tony for helping move the proccess forward!:D

That's an outstanding piece of work!

I simply can't stop envying you...
I'll give ya $5 for it! That's my final offer. Take it or leave it. :p

Ixpfah:...I assume that $5.00 includes a round trip ticket to Norway.., a one week stay at a nice venue you select, and a personal tour of your country??

For the above mentioned details, you can borrow it for a week! :p

Thanks Pete and Tony;

While I personally had a lot to do with this particular knife, From the handle and insert machining and selection for this particular knife to the hollow grinding of the 49 series blades. And while the gold pins and screws were my idea, I can by no means take the credit for this knife. The conceptual design was from Vance Collver with mechanical design assistance from Wes in our engineering staff. Vance has put a lot of himself into the 49 series and if anyone individual deserves credit for the 49 it is Vance. When it came time for the hand finish work on this knife, I could not have asked for better hands than his. It was all I could do to avoid being like a kid on a long road trip during the finish operations (is it done yet?... Sorry to bother you again Vance but, is it done yet?). One should not rush an artist!

When all is said and done, the entire Benchmade team are the real heros here and I am proud to be a part of it.

I will however take FULL credit for my selection of a life partner in my wife, Nina. She is all that you have said and much more. You all should be so lucky.

Thanks again:
Rick Thatch
Benchmade Engineering team

Now Rick, sweetheart, you are being too modest. ;) You know that one important key element was all your doing - you came up with the never-never-done-before hollow ground kris blade. I don't think Vance's feet touched the ground for days after that. :)

(I think my husband is flirting with me on-line! <blush> And men like mine are rare - I waited and snagged him as soon as he came along! :) )

Pete, what can I say after all that! LOL :) For anyone who doesn't know, Pete is a wonderful person. I am very happy the #8 caused our paths to cross, or we may never have had the pleasure of getting to know you Pete. I don't know if this #8 could have gone to anyone nicer. :) And I am hoping that you will be able to make it up to Oregon later this year - I am looking forward to us getting together with you. (But first things first - LOTR is a must! ;) )

And I will be waiting for those special pictures when you finally have your new bali (lazer-bat-blade - did I get that right? ;) ) all ready! :)

Nina

(Rick, dear, we are going to have to talk some more about this 'Catch of the Century' stuff . . . . ;) )

Pete, Nina and Rick -- I too got the e-mail (and saved it) and have to say that I'm really glad to see you got it, Pete. Well done !! As much as I revere and respect Dudley, he appears to get all of the goodies. :( You folks appear to have hit it off --- that's not strange in my experience -- we knife knuts seem to do that. It's gratifying to see the personal as well as the knife appreciation. BM folks are the best !! Rick -- see you at the SHOT Show ???

WOW!!!...well see???? I told you guys!! Nina even got the "Lazer-Bat-Blade" part right! :)

Any chance of "cloning" her Rick?? <~~~teasing.., the gene-splice would never do her justice!

Thanks for the wonderful knife.., the friendship.., the personal comments about -ME-:-).., and all the effort put into getting just one knife.., to one person!~~> a rare thing these days..

Rick: Thanks for your post mentioning Lance and all the team.

I was just eager to post something about the knife.., and Rick spent an hour on the phone with me telling me everyone involved and the complete process.., so I apologize for not including that this was a Team Effort for Benchmade.

Nina: My review of "Lord of the Rings" is forthcoming. :p.., and you will certainly be the first to hear it!

Thanks again for such a nice experience in Lazer-Bat-Bladeville!!! How much better does it get than to meet great people..., and get a great knife too?????

Thanks to Tony again for the help with pictures. I will make a concerted effort to be more functional in that domain.

Congratulations on #8/25.........must be nice to have more 49's than you can 'flip' at the same time! (Up to 3 now, are we??? ;))

You too, Tony! 8-)

Thanks Dudley :).., of course I saw the post about your latest find!! And congratulations to you!!! I have to go back to that thread and see pictures.

And yes..., I haven't quite mastered flipping (3) 49's simultaneously  ..., although I heard a rumor that Tony got some Kevlar gloves and is flailing his "Christmas Cross" with two in each hand..

Congratulations again on that spectacular Samson piece.., and thanks for the kind words.

At a boy Pete! Looks like your toy box is filling up fast!

Yes...I'm jealous! :D

Best regards,

I had hoped to get some nice pic's to make the announcement, but that's just not working out.

So, to not appear ungrateful, Rick and Nina also deserves a huge thanks for letting me adopt the 49-SPL #009.

It's good to have friend on the inside. ;)

I have personally seen this piece and I can tell you that it's wonderful. Truly the pick of the litter.

Nobody will let me take pictures of it because they know that I've secretly made duplicate of it out of paste and when nobody's looking, I'm going to replace the original with the duplicate and keep the real #8 for myself.

Chuck, let me teach you a little lesson. When you are going to perform a 'break' like that, you shouldn't tell anyone.
Remember that till next time, eh? :p

TOny

It has been a real plesure working with you as well! I didn't feel right saying anything since you had not mentioned it online - but now I can say an official thank you to you also! :)

I hope you are enjoying your #9!

Nina

You can certainly photograph the knife anytime you want Chuck.., I'll just send it to Rick first to put some little "squiggles" somewhere secret so I'll know if you sent the "real guy" back. ;)

I'll probably just bring you a bunch to photograph when I come up to Oregon for the show. If that's OK?

I sure hope I can come to the Oregon knife show too... But it's probably in the middle of my exams, and that would pretty much suck.

And it's anyhow in the middle of my school termin... Only for two days, but I'd probably stick there a couple more... I mean, who goes across the Atlantic for only two days?! (Unless it's a business trip...)

Oh well, let's cross the fingers. It would be great to meet all you nice fellas. :) And, of course, to see all the sweet balis. :D
