This forum inspired me to make a video. Give a try, let me know what you think.:)

Never been much on neck carry, one, because I just don't like things around my neck, and two, because of the fear of hanging myself when out climbing around on trails:D

Don't get the guys that use 550 cord for neck knife carry (un-gutted:eek:), I mean they call it 550 for a reason...

Nice alternative for those that want to neck carry but don't want to hang themselves

Its called 550 because it has a 250 kg strain ?
I dont get why people seem to think that it is the only cordage to use , and it needs using for everything but then I havent ever actually had my hands on any of it either ... I make do with string , rope , various kinds of cord ..

Very cool. Previously, I had been using heat shrink tubing on either end of paracord to make it break free. I've been going through a lot of tubing though, so I'm going to give this a try.

Thanks for your positive feedback. I encourage everyone to test out the knot and see if it is right for them. It does take a fair amount of force to release it based on the direction of pull . You can adjust the breaking force to some degree by loosening or tightening the overhand knot. If it is still too strong for you, I would stick with shrink tubing, cord locks, thread or anything else that has worked in the past. I also found these: http://www.lanyardsupply.com/lanyard-m5.htm

I have never heard of anyone getting caught up(seriously) by a neck lanyard. My mentor, who has 30+ years in SAR, has never come across this either. He is half blood native and reminded me that primitive cultures have been hanging stuff around their necks for thousands of years with little problem. Your shirt collar has as much chance to strangle you as your neck lanyard. Cool video though and for those folks who really feel the necessity, your concept does the trick.

That's a great idea, better safe than sorry. It'll be a neat trick to have in one's bag if you were to encounter someone with a regular not around their neck.

the only time I've been concerned with neck carry and the obvious hanging, is what if some mug gripped me by the scruff off my shirt or grabbed my corded business around my neck and started heaving. I'll try this knot because I live in a dodgy part of town and would like to make a habit of wearing my whistle around my neck (because I work in the railways and getting someones attention without the radio can be a pain in the arse)

I was flipping through my Oct'11 issue of Blade and saw a small article on this same lanyard knot option. Was this your inspiration or are you Bob Seymour(the author)? Perhaps it is just coincidence... I often see similar subjects pop up on the forums at the same time.... some kind of weird "collective" thought phenomena.

The concept of your knot is great. Simpler way is to get some ball-chain. No knots necessary, supports/holds objects well yet breaks away nicely.

The problem with the ball-chain is all the noise it makes when the sheath moves on it, drives me nuts, but maybe that's just me:D

No, I did this a couple of years ago. My inspiration was a Mountain Ocarina, which came with a plastic release. I had another ocarina that came with a string, so I thought up with this knot. It's a simple idea, so I'm not surprised others have come up with the same thing over time. Knots are pretty fascinating; they're another expression of human imagination.

If you are wondering what an ocarina is, it's a small flute-like instrument that allows the musically challenged to make music.

it's fairly simple to gut yr paracord and insert the ball chain inside. no knots on the cord and no metal on yr skin nor noise. and the ball chain will break fairly readily if something shld occur.

I'm with Rick Marchand on this one.

I am not sure it is that big of an issue, but if it is a concern or to be on the safe side, try it this way.....

Double the length of para cord and don't gut it. Pass the cord through the band and knot the ends.

If someone or something pulls or snags this the ends will come through the ranger band and no strangulation.

You then have one more source of para cord, and the added resource of the 7 strands inside.

The doubled cord also spreads out the weight a little better if you are carrying a heavier necker or a KPSK like this.
